The Hogans

Live in Lisbeg in Knockglen


Own Hogans Gentlemens Outfitters, a
menswear shop in Knockglen
Benny is an only child.
Patsy is an orphan who has lived and
worked with the Hogans from a young age.

The Malones
Lived in Knockglen
Jack and Sarah both died when Eve was
a baby.
They lived in a cottage near St Marys
Convent in Knockglen. This is the house
that Eve now owns.

The Westwards
The Westwards lived in the Big House in
Knockglen, called Westlands.
They were Protestants. This caused
difficulty as Eves father was a Catholic.
Simon and Heather are Eves cousins.
Their parents have also died. They died
in a car accident.
Heather attends a Protestant boarding
school in Dublin

The Mahons
The Mahons live in 23 Maple Gardens.
Brian, Nans father is an abusive
alcoholic father.
Nan is manipulative and is able to get
what she needs from her father.
Emily Mahon wishes for a better life for
her beautiful daughter.
Emily works in a hotel shop.

The Foleys
The Foleys live in Donnybrook.
Dr John Foley is the driver in the car
accident which causes all of the
protagonists to finally meet.

The Hegartys
Kit Hegarty runs student accommodation
in Dun Laoghaire.
Joseph Hegarty left Kit and Francis to
go to Engand.
Francis is killed in the car accident at
the beginning of the novel.

St Marys
In St Marys Convent Knockglen, Mother
Francis is the main nun in the Order.
She is like a mother to Eve who lives in
the convent.
St Marys is the school in Knockglen
which Benny and Eve attend.

Sean Walsh
Sean Walsh arrives in Knockglen on Bennys 10th birthday.
He works for Bennys father in their shop Hogans Gentlemens
Outfitters and also lives above the shop.
He has notions of marrying Benny so he will have a claim in the shop.
He is creepy and a very unlikeable character.
He ends up marrying Mrs Healy once his secret is discovered.
