Do you think the protagonist was treated unfairly because she is a woman?
What is your opinion about the mental health treatment depicted in The Yellow Wallpaper?
In The Yellow Wallpaper, by Charlotte Perkins Stetson, the protagonist was treated
unfairly because she was a woman. The author wrote, There comes John, and I must put this
away, - he hates to have me write a word (Stetson 649). This is an example of sexism in the
story, because she is saying she is not even allowed to write. I can infer from, What is it, little
girl?" he said. "Don't go walking about like that- you'll get cold" (Stetson 652). The dialogue
shows that her husband sees himself as superior and in charge of the protagonist as he even
addresses her as little girl. Another piece of evidence is, " Bless her little heart!" said he with
a big hug, "she shall be as sick as she pleases! (Stetson 652). As you can see from the John
views himself as bigger than her and sees her as little. He says bless her little heart as if he
viewed her as small and inferior. In the Yellow Wallpaper, there are many examples of sexism in
the story, these are just a few examples.
