NOUNS

A noun is a word used to name a person, animal, place, things, and abstract ideas

KINDS OF NOUNS
1. PROPER NOUNS
These name a specific person, place, thing and always start with capital letter.
Ex. Clifford is walking.
2. Common nounsThese are general names. Usually, you should write it with a capital letter only when
it begins a sentence.
Ex. The Diary of Clifford is so interesting.
3. Mass nounsThese cannot be directly counted and are taken as a whole. They cannot also be
plural by adding.
Ex. The water is refreshing.
4. Count nounsThese are names that can be directly counted. They can also be made as plural by
adding s or es.
ex. We painted the tables with blue.
5. Abstract nounsThese are names of ideas, qualities, conditions or emotions. They cannot be also be
made as plural.
Ex. I miss my childhood memories.
6. Concrete nounsIs a noun that names anything (anyone) that can perceive through your physical
senses.

Ex. The food is delicious.


7. Collective nounsThese are nouns that name a group of person, things and animals.
Ex.
ants
bees
crows

army
swarm
murder

8. Compound nounsthese are nouns that are made up of more than one word.

9. Adjectives that function as nounAdjectives may be considered as nouns when they represent people. They come
after the determiner the and verb may immediately come after them.

Ex. The determined runner finished.

FORMS OF NOUNS
Nouns are easy to find in sentence because of their appearance.
A word is a noun when:

1. It has a singular and plural form.


Ex.
leaf
toy

leaves
toys

2. It has a gender either male, female or neuter.


Ex.
male
bull

female
cow

common
cattle

3. It has cases, namely the nominative (or subjective), the objective, and the
possessive. It is only in the possessive case that the form of noun changes.
4. It has endings or suffixes such as age, -ce ,-dom, -ion, -ism, -ity,
-ness, -or, -ship,
-sy, -tion, -ty, -ure.
Ex. Laughter is the best medicine.
