Biography
Notedforhisrecordingsasaleader,andhisworkasa
sessionmusician,VanEpswasalsotheauthorof
instructionalbooksthatexploredhisapproachto
guitarbasedharmony.Hewaswellknownasa
pioneerofthesevenstringguitar(includingaGretsch
signaturemodelreleasedin1968),whichallowedhim
toincorporatesophisticatedbasslinesintohis
improvisation.Hewasastronginfluenceonlater
sevenstringplayerssuchasHowardAlden(with
whomherecordedfourCDsforConcordRecordsin
theearly1990s),BuckyPizzarelli,andJohnPizzarelli
(Bucky'sson).Hisfatherwasthelegendaryclassic
banjoplayerFredVanEps.[1]
