Literature Review
Research-Based Unit and Lesson Planning (Pagliaro, 2012) is contained within a
hardbound cover, which makes it feel like an important text and it is! Pagliaro organizes her
book for readers to systematically analyze how a lesson plan is developed. She also justifies in
length the effects of research-based planning and the outcomes it has on quality teaching. The
book illustrates many examples of how thorough lesson plans are much more effective at
reaching all types of learners. The critics of the book are in praise of the scholarly quality this
textbook offers to teachers. Anthony Baratta (Pagliaro, 2012) writes,
Research-Based Unit and Lesson Planning is a gold mine and a comprehensive treasure
that should be on the bookshelves of apprentice teachers, probationary teachers, newly
tenured teachers, veteran teachers, and university teacher educators who prepare new
teacher. This book would be an eye-opener for senior political staff advisors to state and
federal congressmen and senators who are self-proclaimed experts on the subject of
schools and educational systems.
Research-Based Unit and Lesson Planning supports the Teacher Performance
Expectation Domain D: Planning Instruction and Designing Learning Experienced for Students
(2013) because the chapters of the book are research-based and provide readers with the exact
expectations needed for developing lesson plans that align with an optimal unit plan. After
reading this book I felt confident meeting the needs of all learners, teaching for transfer and
scallfolding instruction. This book is also a great refresher for incorporating elements of lesson
and unit plan design that may be forgotten in the process, such as differentiated instruction.
