    Jule Styne was a British-born American composer who had success on Broadway with several musicals from the 1940s-1960s. Some of his most notable works were Gypsy, Bells Are Ringing, and Funny Girl. Funny Girl, with lyrics by Bob Merrill and starring Barbra Streisand, was adapted from the life of Fanny Brice and had a very successful Broadway run of over 1,300 performances from 1964. The musical The Fantasticks is the longest-running show in Broadway history, with a 42 year run off-Broadway and lyrics and book by Tom Jones and music by Harvey Schmidt. It continues to have productions to this day.
