6.

4 network Topologies
Remember
1. Describe the three network topologies.
The three network topologies are star topology, ring topology and bus
topology. In star topology the nodes all go to one central node. In the ring
topology the data goes to each node in turn this can go one or both ways
and in bus topology where there is a single cable in which the nodes are all
connected to.
2. Identify one advantage for each of the different topologies.
Star: If a cable to a node is broken then only that node is affected. Ring: A
single cable is used to connect all the nodes. Bus: Easy and cheap.
3. Identify one disadvantage for each of the different topologies.
Star: Requires more cable so is then more expensive. Ring: If the ring is
broken then the entire network stops working. Bus: There can be traffic
problems with the entire network slowing down.

4. What topology would you use so that you and three of your friends
could play networked computer games? Explain your decision.
Star topology would be better because it would be much quicker which is
important when playing networked games.

5. If your school has a network, find out what topology it uses. What would
be the most appropriate network topology for your particular school?
(Hint: The size of your school and the number of computers on your
network will influence your decision.)
Our school uses star because there is many computers in the network and
it’s much quicker.
