Like Never Before
In Like Never Before, readers are invited to revisit the muchloved Walker clan in a story that delivers on the promise that
even if lost once, love can be found again. In true Melissa Tagg
style, the dialogue is smart and the romance is real and raw in
all the right places. This series iswitty storytelling at its best.

In Like Never Before, author Melissa Tagg once again welcomes readers to the fictitious town of Maple Valley, even as she
crafts characters you come to care about like real-life friends.
The story, woven through with Taggs trademark humor, highlights an abiding love of family and the importance of anchoring
yourself to God when life is hard. One of my favorite books
by this author!

From: Amelia Bentley
Subject: Hello?
Hi, Logan,
Yep, its me again. Amelia Bentley. I know, youd think after
three unanswered emails Id give up. But reporterseven
small-town Iowa oneshave spunk. Except, hmm, maybe
youre some Lou Granttype and you hate spunk.
In that case, Ive got persistence, determination, and, fine, a
fair bit of stubbornness.
Which is why Im writing you this third email to see if you have
any interest in coming back to work for the News. Since Freddie passed away, were short a reporter. I know you live in LA
now, so this is probably crazy talk. But you told me yourself
you miss the newspaper world. So I cant help asking...
Amelia Bentley
Editor, Maple Valley News
p.s. It just occurred to me that maybe the reason you havent
replied is you dont remember me. I was the reporter at your
sisters boyfriends nonprofits grand opening last month.

But hey, its almost graduation time. Check with the area colleges. I bet you can find a journalism major in need of a job.

like something off The West Wing? Sure, go for it. His voice
came out dull, croaky, as if hed been the one to enter the smokefilled building.
But he hadnt. Someone else had been watching his daughter
before the fire. Someone else had rescued her during it.
He was just the guy who clung helplessly to her in the after
math.
Just like so many evenings, when he arrived home hours
after dark, only minutes before Charlie drifted off to sleep for
the night. Hed rock her long after she nodded off, trying to
convince himself this was working, this single parent thing.
But it was getting harder and harder to believe his own assurances.
A male voice speaking through a megaphone blasted in. Attention, please.
Theo paused, leaning over the open taxi door. Dont do it
to yourself, Walker.
Logan glanced at his friend. Was he that see-through?
Dont beat yourself up for not being there earlier or think
youre a horrible dad. Anybody would admire the way youve
raised Charlie since Emma...
The firemans voice droned in the background, letting the
crowd know thered been only structural damage to a couple
apartments. Most residents could reenter the building in a few
minutes. A couple units on the sixth floor, thoughLogans
floorhad suffered heavy smoke damage.
Ill tell you what Roberta S. Hadley says after I talk to her,
okay?
Logan grasped for the interest he knew he should be able to
muster. Roberta S. Hadley. Presidential campaign. She wants us.
Minutes later, he watched the taxi cut a path through the
maze of vehicles and fire engines blocking the street. He felt
the softness of Charlies palm on his cheek and looked down

Focus. C.J. Cranford. The News. The jobs you need to save.
Things she might be able to change.
Versus things she couldnt. No matter how hard she tried.
Megan kneaded the small of her back just below her aprons
knot. Hired a new girl last week and turns out, shes about as
dependable as an untrained puppy.
Too bad. I gotta run, but heres hoping you survive the next
week. She handed Megan a five. Keep the change.
She didnt run from the counter, but she might as well have
for all the polish of her escape. Meg probably wondered what
her deal was. They used to be friendsor friend-ish, at least.
Amelia had even worked a few shifts at the coffee shop just to
pad her income. Meg had asked her back when shed reopened
after the flood.
But by then Amelia had heard the news about Megans surprise pregnancy.
And she just couldnt.
She found C.J. where shed left hernow wearing a greenand-yellow ribbon.
Twins, C.J. said as she accepted the cup from Amelia.
Thats my vote.
Dont say that too loud or Megan might chuck a sugar
shaker at you.
Will I get in trouble for voting even though Im not an official Maple Valley citizen?
Are you kidding? The mayoreveryone, reallywould love
the thought of sucking in an outsider.
Amelia followed C.J. to a counter crammed with coffee supplies. C.J. set down her cup and reached for the sugar. Listen,
I need to get back, and we havent even touched on why Im
here yet. You clearly think I want to talk about the closing of
the News. She popped the lid off her cup. Youre wrong.
I am?

icy press release. She added another folder to the pile in his
arms. And the Cohen Foundation wants a bullet-point overview
for the governors fundraiser speech next week.
Not happening. Logan pulled the pencil from between
his teeth, eyes on the top file. He perched on the corner of the
mahogany desk that claimed one corner of the small office.
So much to get done today. Especially if he meant to pack up
and travel back to Iowa this week. Which he did. Theo might
throw a fit, but what could he do? That certified letter from the
law firm in Maple Valley hadnt left him much choice.
Oh, Freddie, you were great in so many ways. But why me?
Couldnt he have left his newspaper to someone who...
well... wanted it? And how horribly ungrateful was that
thought?
Are you even listening to me, Walker? Stress curved Theos
brow from where he stood behind Alena.
Theyre concerned the governor will go over his allotted
twenty-five minutes, Alena said as she moved around him to
straighten the contents of the plastic shelf on his desk marked
Inbox. The one he rarely remembered to riffle through.
Logan dropped the files onto his chair, attention darting to
Charlie playing in the corner. Books, dollshed brought all
her quietest toys to the office today. Gov goes over one time
and suddenly were incapable of pacing his speech. Tell them
the speech will be perfectly timed down to his every pause
twenty-three and a half minutes, with ninety seconds for applause before and after.
Alena used the edge of her shirt to dust off his laptop. Whatever you say, boss. Though I think itd be funny if you pared
the whole thing down to, oh, fifteen minutes. Just for shock
value. Let the event organizers scramble to fill the extra ten
minutes. She stopped cleaning his desk and stood in front of
him, playful smirk in place.

Dear Mary,
If you were my daughter, Id tell you about how I
ended up in Maple Valley, Iowaa little town west of
Ames, tucked into a rolling landscape of quilted fields
and patches of trees and prairie grass. We like to call
ourselves a tourist spot with our heritage railroad and
more antique stores than any one town needs.
I came here on a whim, looking for a man Id never
methis name was Kendall Wilkins. I was two years too
late.
I didnt find Kendall. But what I found instead was
home.

The second he heard his own voice, Logan jerked. As did the
woman in his arms. The woman who couldnt possibly be Emma.
She stumbled from his grasp, strands of hair toppling from
her ponytail, shock written all over her face. Completely justifiable shock, given what had just happened.
You went off the deep end.
He closed his eyes, exhaustion from the two-day drive clawing
at him. That had to be it. The fatigue. The dark room. The fact
that as hed sung Charlie back to sleep after carrying her into
the house, memories of being here in this room with Emma
had risen like fog and obviously confused him.
And for one longing-filled moment, hed actually thought...
Im... youre not... He willed his words to work, whispering lest he wake Charlie. Im sorry.
Its okay, Logan. I shouldnt have barged in here.
She knew him? Who... ?
But then she stepped back, moonlight filtered through filmy
curtains highlighting her profilebutton nose, freckles. Even
in the wan light, her eyes were familiar.
Amelia, she supplied. Amelia Bentley. From the News.
The editor whod tried to coax him home in a one-day email
exchange. The one with the camera at Colts press conference.
But why was she here?
And could she see the warmth crawling over him? It was more
