LITERATURE REVIEW: ARTICULATING - TEACHING WRITING IN A VISUAL WORLD

Abstract
This paper is a Literature Review on the textbook ARTiculating: Teaching Writing In A Visual
World by Pamela B. Childers, Eric H. Hobson and Joan A. Mullin. This book illustrates the ways
to read art in order to develop reading, writing, listening and speaking skills. I chose this book
as an artifact for the Teacher Performance Expectation Domain F: Developing as a Professional
Educator because it supports my professional development goal of increasing my role as an arts
educator to include teaching AP Art History.

Literature Review
ARTiculating: Teaching Writing In A Visual World (Childers, et.al, 1998) is a book I am
beginning to read in order to prepare my teaching in best practices to include visual literacy,
visual analysis, and comparative studies in my classroom. The writing is a bit dense and begins
by discussing the philosophies of art analysis before applying them to the classroom. Once I
read through the dense introduction and preface advocating for visual analysis in educational
settings I transferred over to the chapters that described visual analysis activities that could be
easily adopted into my classroom. I am happy that the book is not just an exploration of visual
analysis methods, but also a guidebook for teachers who want to implement instructional
strategies that support writing. I feel as though the excerpt describing visual analysis activities
are much easier to understand and include in curriculum planning, for my studio art classes as
well as my plans for a future AP Art History class at my school.
ARTiculating: Teaching Writing In A Visual World supports the Teacher Performance
Expectation Domain F: Developing as a Professional Educator (2013) because the book is
organized for readers who teach art and also understand the importance of integrating writing
into the curriculum. With the Common Core State Standards Initiative (2015) teachers are
expected to integrate reading, writing and real-world scenario problem solving into their lesson
plans in order to better prepare students for success in college and careers. Using this book in
my classroom now benefits my instructional practice by integrating ELA skills into art making
and it also prepares me to select instructional activities in art analysis writing that I will
eventually need to adopt for the AP program.
