Cells: The Building

Blocks of Life

Cells are the building

Which of these are
blocks of life. Everything
made of cells?
living is made of cells.
CHAIR?

FLOWER?

FISH?

ROCK?

Plant and Animal Cells:

Plant and animal cells contain many of the same
ORGANELLES (parts of the cell that do a specific job).
They both contain NUCLEI, CELL MEMBRANES,
CYTOPLASM, MITOCHONDRIA, and CHROMOSOMES.

FISH?

Plant Cells:
Plants cells differ from animal cells in several ways.
Plant cells are generally rectangle in shape. They
contain a cell wall and a large vacuole. Plant cells also
have chloroplasts and chlorophyll which help them
make their own food.

FISH?

Chlorophyll

Animal Cells:
Animal cells, by contrast, are generally round in
shape. They contain several vacuoles but NO cell
walls or chloroplasts/chlorophyll. Animals do not make
their own food.

FISH?

Prokaryote vs. Eukaryote

Some cells have a nucleus. Those cells are called
EUKARYOTE. Trick... YOU have a nucleus in each of
your cells... You are YOU-karyotic. PROKARYOTE cells
do NOT have a nucleus.

FISH?

Single-Celled vs. Multi-Celled

Some organisms are single-celled. These cells tend to
be so small they can only be seen with a microscope.
FISH?
Examples of single-celled organisms include: bacteria
and amoeba. Some organisms are multi-celled. These
organisms are more complex and include plants and
animals.

Draw Diagrams
Use the space provided in your notes to draw andFISH?
label a diagram of a plant cell and an animal cell. Be
sure to label the organelles.
