FINAL EXAM REVIEW

Dec 5th , 2012

Exam II covers practically chapter 7 and the first 2 sections in chapter 10. The knowledge to
be examined will not exceed the scope of lecture notes.
1. Understand concept of normal distribution. Know how to find the probability of an even
under normal distribution and reversely given a probability of a region, find the value(s)
of normal random variable that composes this region.
2. Master theorem 2-5 given in chapter 6 in the lecture note. These theorems specify the
sampling distribution of sample mean or sample proportion.
3. Understand what is population and what is sample. Understand the difference between
them. Understand how these concepts are used in the statistical inference.
4. Understand the concept of confidence interval estimation and hypothesis testing. Compare and contrast two concepts. Understand the difference about inference concerning
population mean and population proportion.
5. Master the skill to estimate population mean and population proportion by both confidence interval estimation and hypothesis testing.
6. Master the technique of how to construct a arbitrary level of confidence interval under
different scenarios; how to find a sample size under certain confidence level in order to
keep the confidence interval within a limit; how to find the confidence level given a fixed
sample size and the length of the confidence interval.
7. Know how to interpret a confidence interval properly.
8. know the relationship between confidence interval and hypothesis testing. Understand
why they reach the same conclusion.
9. Know what is null and alternative hypothesis. Understand their differences. Master how
to set up a pair of hypotheses given a practical context.
10. Be familiar with two methods of doing hypothesis testing. Master each component in 5
steps in both methods. In particular be able to know how to calculate p-value and make
a decision accordingly and know how to find rejection region and acceptance region.
Understand why both methods yield the same conclusion.
11. Understand the concept of type I and type II error by definition. Be able to interpret
the error you might commit once a decision is made in the hypothesis testing. Be able to
calculate probability of type I and type II error.
12. Know how to determine the sample size under the control of both types of errors.
