Unsafe Foods

Me
A healthy diet during pregnancy is vital not only to your health, but also to your
growing babys health. Certain foods need to be avoided as they pose a potential
risk to both you and your baby. Below is a list of common foods that should not
be consumed during pregnancy and the type of bacteria that they could
contain.
Raw Meat
Undercooked seafood and rare beef
or poultry
Coliform Bacteria, Toxoplasmosis,
Salmonella
Deli Meat
Listeria
(can cause miscarriage by
infecting the baby)
Fish with Mercury
Can lead to developmental delays
and brain damage
Shark, swordfish, king mackerel,
tilefish, sometimes canned light
tuna, certain fish used in sushi, fish
from local lakes and streams
(bluefish, striped bass, salmon, pike,
trout, walleye, raw shellfish
Mercury
Raw or Undercooked Fish
Sushi
Parasites and Bacteria

Raw Eggs
Homemade caesar dressings,
mayonnaise, homemade ice cream
and custards, hollandaise sauces,
homemade cookie dough/batters
Salmonella
Soft Cheeses
Many can be made with
unpasteurized milk
Brie, camembert, roquefort, feta,
gorgonzola, queso blanco, queso
fresco
E. Coli, Listeria
