The book Shapes That Roll by Karen Berman Nagel

A page of shapes including circles, squares, triangle, rectangle, oval, heart, diamond, star,
crescent, octagon, and hexagon. You could give the children each two sheets to have two

of each different shape.

Scissors
Crayons or markers
Glue
Construction paper

Lesson:
1. Get children attention by clapping hands three times, since this is a routine in the room
when transitioning to something new the children will clap three times back.
2. Have children all gather in the reading area.
3. Start out asking the children questions about the cover of the book. Example: What
shapes are on the cover? Can someone sound out the title?
4. Read the title of the book, then read the entire book.
5. While reading point to the shapes as you say the word for them.
6. When finished reading the book, the children may have some questions. Answer their
questions during and after the book.
7. Tell the children what the activity is going to be. Cutting shapes out of paper.

8. While the children are working on cutting shapes out, walk around the classroom asking
the children to name the different shapes.
9. If there is still time, if not continue activity next day.
10. Continue next day by reading the book Shapes That Roll to the children again.
11. Continue activity by explaining to the children they are to create something out of the
shapes they cut out the previous day.
12. The children can use their creativity to create anything they like.
13. Have children write what they created on their papers, if they need help write the word
down for them and have them copy it.
14. Have the children share their pictures with the class by explain what their pictures are and
what shapes they used.
Check for Understanding:
The following day have shape drawn on the board and have the children name the shapes. If the
majority of the children can name most of the shape then the activity and the book have helped
them with learning. Continue to review the shapes with the children.
