Portfolio 5
Child Profile
During my observations of the child I studied, my 17 year old brother, I have learned that not all
children, whether on a general scale or compared in age groups, are the same when it comes to where
they are socially, emotionally, cognitively, or physically. Along with this, children do not have to be
equal in all these areas, meaning that there strengths could be in a particular area, or two even. Not all
students will work in the zone of proximity; for they can be above or below, for all we know.
My brother, while seemingly being average or textbook standard in some areas of
development, is above average in physical development. The statement I made above pertaining to
being equal across the board, has him as evident proof of my opinion. His genetic background
provided the boost he needed to be above average. However, he acts, both emotionally and socially,
just like almost every teenager; the norm. The observations have proved my thoughts about how
different we all are; being compared to the textbook way children are normally supposed to behave and
act, as well as look.
If I learned anything, your surroundings do impact who you are and how you respond to
situations. No two people's situations are alike, nor are there more than a handful of children who fit
the textbook's normal standards. Everyone is different and have their strengths and weaknesses. We all
react to these situations and environments in diverging ways. I actually appreciate this assignment, for
the chance to delve into the mind and actions of a child and be able to compare and know what the
standards are for each age group. It helps to know in the future when I notice problems my students
may or may not be experiencing, along with finding ways to help them to strive for success.

InTASC Standard One: Learner Development

The teacher understands how learners grow and develop, recognizing that patterns of
development vary individually within and across the cognitive, linguistic, social,
emotional, and physical areas, and designs and implements developmentally
appropriate and challenging learning experiences.
