(Carol of the Nuns of St. Mary's, Chester)
THIS quaint old lullaby is a product of the Mystery Plays which were
so common during the Middle Ages. The Mystery Plays, presented
at Christmas, Easter and Whitsuntide, were based on the Bible and
the Apochryphal Gospels. Many carols, growing out of these plays,
have survived through the centuries. One of these, Lully, Lully, Lu,
is an old lullaby carol used in the Chester Mysteries. The Chester Mysteries are said to
have originated in 1327 and comprised twenty-four pageants, A few of the carols of these
pageants have been preserved and are still sung in the cathedral church of Chester,
England, on Christmas Eve.
Lully, Lully, Lu is an old Italian carol which some authorities say dates back to the
time of St, Francis (13th century). This Chester version dates from the 15th century and
is taken from The Processional of the Nuns of St. Mary's.
