Electrospray Ionization

By: Heidi Park

What Is It Used For?

Liquid to an aerosol
Analyze large molecules
without destroying them.
Ex: protein, peptide,
oligosaccharide

How Does It
Work?

How Does the Ionization Work?

Advantages & Disadvantages

Advantages:
Large molecules can be analyzed (MW > 70,000)
Ionizes very fragile molecules and non-covalent
complexes
Can be easily interfaced with HPLC

Disadvantages:
Not useful for non-polar compounds
Spectra of mixtures get too complex
