Joint Committee on Environmental Sustainability (JCES)

Meeting Minutes
March 26, 2010, 9:30 a.m., Wing Technology Center 126

Attendance: Larry Sleznikow, Dan Sweetman, Matt Landi, Jeremy Gragert, Missy Ruplinger, Liana Skibbie,

1. M/S/P to approve the agenda for today’s meeting.

2. M/S/P to accept minutes of the February 26 meeting.

3. Announcements:

• 2010 Census: UW-L will benefit if students complete census forms, however their La Crosse
address must be used. This could indirectly influence funding for MTU.
• Human Rights awareness week will be March 29-April 1
• Bike-powered concert will be in the Concordia Ballroom April 1.
• Riki Ott will be speaking on campus March 31.
• Earth Week brochures are out. Will Allen will be coming to campus April 13.
• Bob Hetzel presented plans for a new UW-L parking ramp this week.
• The MTU bus circulator route study will be presented to Student Senate next Wednesday by
consultant Bob Born. Preliminary discussions with Bob will occur at 2:00pm in 257 Cartwright.

4. A motion was discussed about requesting that three students, one each from Student Senate,
Environmental Council, and JCES, be included on the committee that is planning the new parking ramp.
Committee membership should also include a staff/faculty member from JCES. This motion will be
considered next week.

5. Rob Turner presented ideas about obtaining funding for a photovoltaic project at UW-La Crosse. Funding
from Xcel Energy will may available for such projects in the near future. A roof-top project for Mitchell
Hall was suggested as a site option. Parking lot canopies might also be an option for photovoltaic panels.
Xcel funding was used for alternative energy projects at St. Olaf and other campuses. Kohl’s may also
fund projects like this. The Wisconsin Energy Center would be helpful in evaluating proposals for roof-
top systems.

6. Green Fund proposal evaluation. About $200,000 is available from the Green Fund.

• Cartwright Center LED bulbs: M/S/P to fully fund this proposal (11/0/1).
• REC fluorescent lighting: M/S/P to fully fund this proposal (11/0/0)

Other Green Fund proposals to be considered:


• Organic garden
• Residence hall low flow shower heads
• Vermicomposting
• Wind turbine
• Dyson Airblade hand dryers
