Introduction
In this assignment, we are required to create a
video clip that requires at least 5 different concepts
that we have learnt throughout the whole semester
in Social Psychology. We are also required to write
a report based on the short video and to present
the short video during class. We are divided into
groups of four, which includes Adele Lu, Calvin
Wong, Tey Cheng Fern and Yeoh Sin Yuen. After a
short discussion and 4 meetings, we have decided
to create a short film named Smoking Kills. This
short film is about a guy losing his good friend
because of smoking, involving love ones having
hard time taking in those incident and eventually
changing some of their life style but still being
judge by others at the end. After much research
and analysis for our scripts, the concepts that are
used in this short film are social influence,
confirmation bias, post decision dissonance,
upward counterfactual thinking and stereotyping.
Lastly, we hope that this video will allow students
to relate about the concepts in social psychology
for their everyday life.

Method
Apparatus & Material Used
1. Panasonic Lumix Digital Camera
2. Headphones
3. Cigarettes
4. Notebook
5. Software: Movie Maker

Procedure
All of us each agreed to come out with a story
and post the story in our whatsapp group chat.
After that, we voted for the story we think it is the
best to explain the different concepts. Finally, we
decided to choose Calvin Wongs story. His story is
about a guy who lost his good friend because of
hard-core smoking causing him to lose his life from
heart attack and lung failure.
After deciding on Calvin Wongs story, we
discussed about the theories and concepts that can
be included in the video. Adele then wrote the
script of the video and the next day, we started
filming. We decided to film the whole video within
Taylors University Lakeside Campus because all of
our members have transportation problems and
the only suitable way is we meet up in campus.
The day we started filming, Calvin gave a
short brief about his story and the roles that each
of us will be acting on. We used one day to film this
video and about 4 hours to finish shooting the
whole video scenes.
Lastly, last video editing is done by Adele and
Cheng Fern, using the video editing software,
Movie Maker. We divided the report that we needed
to do into different parts for each member to
complete so it can be done as soon as possible
before the submission date.

Discussion
17th January 2016

Every one of us came up with a story and we voted

for the best story to work on. After that, Adele
created the script and Calvin was in charge of the
location and props. Then, we gathered all our data
about the concepts in the story.

24th January 2016

Calvin gave a short brief about the story and we

memories our own scripts for our own roles. After
that we started filming from 2pm till 6pm.

30th January 2016

Adele and Cheng Fern finished editing the final

video. Calvin was in charge of the compilation of
the report and Sin Yuen did the slides for our
presentation.

Plot
Calvin and his friends were having a normal
gathering at a restaurant in Taylors University. They
are semester 2 students for the Foundation in Natural
and Built Environment. One of his friends gave him
cigarettes and asks him to try on it. At first Calvin
rejected his friends but lastly he still could not resist
and took the cigarette to have a try.
The next day, one of Calvins classmates, Adele
saw him smoking. Then she decided to meet up with
him and have a talk. When Adele confronted Calvin for
his wrong beings Calvin immediately replied angrily
saying that it was none of her business! Adele tried to
say some of the bad effects that cigarette will cause
him bad health but he keeps on denying it.
One evening, Calvins good friend Alex was
having a casual date with his girlfriend Sin Yuen. Alex
suddenly passed out on the floor and was sent to the
hospital. At the hospital Sin Yuen heard about the bad
news and informed Calvin about it. When Calvin knew
about it, he was very sad. This incident hit Calvin hard
and he decided to stop smoking, in honour of his
friend Alex.
Calvin still has his lunch with his circle of friends.
He goes out with them but he does not smoke
10

anymore. His classmates stereotype him as he still

mingles with the group of people, but actually he
changed a new leaf and started to live a better life. He
did not even care of what others say but him being
himself.
