Shakespeare planned Much Ado About Nothing to be a comedy but I beg to differ.

There
are elements in this play that do not nudge the reader in the direction of thinking that this play is
actually a comedy, for example, Gossip. In this play you see Don Pedro plotting to get Benedick
together with Beatrice and to get them married and in the background how Don John plots to
break Hero and Claudios marriage. The plot in short is painted on a canvas splattered with the
colours of gossip and plotting.
Gossiping put some people together but made the only one left out sad. This is shown
when Don Pedro arranged a plot for Hero and Claudio to get together and some gossip for
Beatrice and Benedict too. This made Don Pedro the only one without a wife or lover at the end
of the play. (See Pg. 98) Benedick: First, of my word; therefore play, music. Prince, thou art
sad; get thee a wife, get thee a wife: there is no staff more reverend than one tipped with horn.
This shows Don Pedro is sad because when Benedick says Prince he is referring to Don
Pedro. Also Don Pedro in the end is the only one without a spouse. To finish off this paragraph,
gossip put some people together but made the only one left out sad.
This paragraph is totally off of speculation and inferences. Don John is probably acting
on fear and despair. This is shown because Don John loses his birthright to be king because he
is the bastard son. Society treats him as an outcast, the lowest of the low. Leonato says, If you
swear, my lord, you shall not be forsworn. He seems to be saying that Don John does not have
loyalty to his Prince brother, Don Pedro. You can see that society has thrown Don John out just
because he is a bastard. If you think about it, and I mean really think, you can see that Don
John never asked to be a bastard and he didnt even ask to be born. If you look at all the evil
stuff Don John does you can see it is only so that society will recognize him as a person, even if
it means he has to be an evil one.
The play Much Ado About Nothing is darker than we think it is because of all the
Plotting. First off Hero and Claudio get split apart because of Don Johns plotting and villany.
(See Pg.84) who in the night overheard me confessing to this man how Don John your brother
incensed me to slander the Lady Hero, how you were brought into the orchard and saw me
court Margaret in Hero's garments, how you disgraced her, when you should marry her: my
villany they have upon record; which I had rather seal with my death then repeat over to my
shame. The lady is dead upon mine and my master's false accusation This shows that Don
John is a villain and almost killed an innocent young woman. Don John is probably acting on
fear and despair. Next I reason with you over the point that plotting is the reason that Claudio
and Hero got together. Claudio tells Don Pedro that he is in love with Hero and this is Don
Pedros response, Thou wilt be like a lover presently And tire the hearer with a book of words.
If thou dost love fair Hero, cherish it, And I will break with her and with her father, And thou shalt
have her. Was't not to this end That thou began to twist so fine a story? This is the reason why
everything else happend it wasnt only because of Don John but also because of Don Pedros
greed to be a love god. To conclude this paragraph, Plotting did more evil than good.
In conclusion the play much ado about nothing was tragic because of a couple different
reasons, Gossip and Plotting. All the gossip in this play led to more gossip and this branched

of into plotting. As you can see many of the characters meant the gossip and plotting for good
but in the end the good things the things that they did only led to a lot of hurt and destruction.
This shows us that you should never do the wrong thing for what you may think is a good
reason but as you see in this play nothing comes good from doing bad.
Good job using quotations as evidence, but you did not format them correctly. You need to
explain quotes afterward as well. You can still go further with analysis of authors purpose and
theme. Watch spelling and grammar as well. In your conclusion, explain what the reader
can learn from this.
