Homework Week Mobile Phone Photo Analysis

Ansel Mederos
December 1st, 2015

Task: Analyze a photo acquired from a clients cellphone in order to prove said clients
innocence or guilt.
Finding 1: Matched the hash value (059b138917504f80599e556f3017b246) reported in the
original assignment with the image file (client.jpg). Confirming that the hash values match and
that the image has not been tampered with or changed in any way.
Finding 2: Upon inspection of the image itself it appears as though it was taken at some sort of
sea side bunker, probably old military. Immediate location is unknown based on visual
inspection.
Finding 3: Upon inspection of the properties of the file the following information was obtained
Date Taken: 07/11/2009
Date Digitized: 07/11/2009
Time Taken: 1:42:43 pm
Location (GPS Coordinates): Latitude 29;53;51.600000000005934 & Longitude
81;18;40.200000000011613
Make & Model of device: Apple, iPhone
Finding 4: Upon using a GPS Coordinate converter using the coordinates in the metadata of the
image, I have traced the address to 1 S Castillo Dr, St Augustine, FL 32084, USA.
This is home to Fort Alley and the Castillo de San Marcos, which is a 17th century fortress.
This investigator confirms that the location hidden within the GPS metadata is also the same
location as pictured in the image.

Analysis of Findings: It is this investigators inference than the image contained in client.jpg is
confirmed to have been taken at Fort Alley, St. Augustine, Florida in the Castillo de San Marcos

on July 11th, 2009 at 1:42 and 43seconds in the afternoon. It should be noted that client is not
pictured in the photograph. If other images exist with the client pictured in, or around, the same
time frame, it should be noted that these would help the clients case. Otherwise, it is impossible
to determine who the photographer was based on this photograph alone. Further analysis of other
images containing photographs of the client should be investigated to prove the client was the
one taking the photos at this location during this time frame.
