Veterinary Science is the science of diagnosing,


treating and curing the diverse types of diseases in
birds and animals. The subject broadly covers the
study of animal physiology, treatment and
prevention of diseases among animals. The basic
principles of this specialized branch of study are
quite similar to that of human medical sciences. But
the job profile of a veterinary doctor or a vet is
much more than that of a general physician or a
surgeon. It involves not only taking care of animal
health but also includes scientific breeding and
handling of livestock.

For admission into a helor s degree a student must


have passed 10+2 with biology, chemistry and physics
and he/she also needs to qualify the entrance test
conducted by the concerned universities. Veterinary
Council of India conducts an All India Common
Entrance Exa i atio (AICEE) for admission to first
year Bachelor of Veterinary Science (BVSc) & Animal
Husbandry (AH) degree course. The duration for
a helor s degree program varies from 4-5 years,
including the period of internship.

In the recent years there has been a fabulous growth and


demand for veterinary doctors in the field of veterinary
science. Veterinarians can opt to work with private and
government veterinary hospitals, farms related to
poultry, sheep and rabbit, animal husbandry clinics.
Veterinary services are also required by the dairy
research institutes. The government also undertakes
veterinarians as public health officers whose services are
used in national parks, zoos and wildlife sanctuaries. The
defense services also use animals such as dogs, camels,
and horses etc which also require the services offered by
a veterinarian.

Remuneration

The amount of remuneration of a veterinarian


depends upon the kind of practice and the animals
that are treated. An average vet can earn between
Rs.1,20,000 to Rs.3,00,000 per annum.
