DISTILLATION

Prepared by: Engr. Melissa M. Abansi

DRYING

DRYING
Removal of water from
materials containing a
relatively small amount
of water using hot
surfaces

DRYING (Direct Heating)

Solvent, S
Wet
Solids, W

DRYER

Dried
Solids, D

Solvent Stream, S : leaves as

a vapor, and is solids free
Dried Solids, D : leave in the
solid phase, and may contain
the solvent
Feed, F : can be a solid,
slurry or solution

Mechanisms of Drying
Migration of moisture from the
interior of an individual grain to the
surface;
Evaporation of moisture from the
surface of the surrounding air
Rate of Drying is Dependent on the
following:
1. Moisture Content
2. Temperature and temperature of
the Grain
3. Relative Humidity
4. Velocity of the air in contact with
the grain.
