Alackofawarenessandafailuretoproperlyassesspotentially
dangeroussnapbackzonesduringtheplanningofmooring
operationsresultsincrewmembersbeingpositionedindangerous
areas.Intheeventofthemooringlinepartingthispoorpositioning
canresultinseriousorfatalinjury.
Acriticalfactorintheplanningandassessmentoftherisks
associatedwithamooringoperation,isunderstandingthe
propertiesofthemooringlinesinuse.Considerationmustalsobe
giventotheeffectanytailwillhaveonthecharacteristicsofthe
mooringrope.Thisisparticularlyrelevantwhenfittingsynthetic
tailstohighmodulussyntheticfibre(HMSF)andwiremooringlines,bothofwhichhavelesselasticitythansyntheticropes.
Theincreasedelasticityandtheincreasedelongationofsyntheticropeswillincreasetheamountofenergystoredinthetail
whenunderload.Thelongerthetailthegreateritspotentialelongationandsothegreatertheenergystoredintheline.
Shouldthemooringlinefail,thentheentirelengthofthemooringlinecouldbeexpectedtosnapbackasaresultofthe
increaseinstoredenergy.Ifthelinehasbeendirectedaroundrollers,thenitislikelythatcomplexsnapbackzoneswillbe
created.
Thepotentialforcomplexsnapbackzonesbeingcreated,andthe
potentialfortheelasticpropertiesofthemooringlinetobe
significantlychanged,highlightstheimportanceofproperly
planningmooringoperations,ensuringallpersonnelinvolved
