Math Lesson 3.2 Day 2

Date: November 3, 2015

Standard:
4.NBT.B.5: I can multiply two 2-digit numbers.

Learning Target/Objectives: Students will be able to multiply two 2-digit numbers.

Materials Needed: Math spirals, Turtle sequencing sheet, whiteboards, markers, and
Kleenex for erasers, green cups, pencil, blank Big 2s

Description/overview of lesson:
Review trends from exit slip from previous day on elmo.
Introduce activity and model expectations for whiteboard activity.
Move students to balance groups with students with different levels of understanding
based on previous days exit slip.
Small group will be with Adrian at front trapezoid table (Avery, Trinity, Shyal, Lual
and Iyahna and Adin if they are in the room).
Other seating changes based on exit slip:
Paige, Arionna, Emari to table 2
Names omitted.
Tyler to table 1
Owen and Anil to table 6
Cindy to table 5
All students will work on a problem; one student at each group will explain their thinking
and how they did the problem. This person will rotate each time. Students will
communicate with non-verbal hand signals to show that they agree or disagree with the
student leader. Leader will choose students to share thoughts if others disagree.
Discuss after each student had the chance to be the leader (four problems total).

TASK (written vertically)
1. 23 x 43
2. 51 x 34
3. 16 x 24
4. 35 x 41
5. 13 x 56

BEFORE
1 minute: Get kids excited. Were going to get so good at multiplying two 2-digit numbers!
Were going to take some time and practice what we learned yesterday.

5 minutes: Model behavior expectations during whiteboard time. Stay in seat, quiet voices,
only leader should be talking or person they call on, hold the board in front of yourself, not
pushing it at others, not yelling out to teacher or friend across the room, etc. Students
show they agree with hand sign and put hand on head if they think differently.

**Practice with the cup by asking students to share their favorite color. If others have the
same or different, they should show it by using the hand signals. When leaders share it

should be in a low/whisper voice then they should pass the cup clockwise. When they get
back to the first person, they should freeze.

If groups finish early they can finish old Big 2s, morning work, or silently read.

DURING
20 minutes (by 9:15): Do 4 problems on whiteboards. Leaders will have a green cup in
front of them. All students will do every problem and leader will explain how they did it
when they completed the problem. Help students manage time by telling them about 5
minutes per problem. Circulate and listen to student reasoning and see their work. Take
note of any misunderstandings that should be addressed with the whole class.

AFTER
20 minutes (AT 9:35): Summarize what we achieved today. Any light bulbs for
students? Explain new way of doing Big 2. Model on elmo. Give two 2-digit problems and
collect as exit slip.
