GUIDELINES FOR STUDENTS ON CASE DISCUSSIONS

1. Read the case assignment given to you. Everyone must read the case and
contribute to the discussion. Your faculty facilitator is there to oversee the process
and to clarify concepts. You will be graded as a group, so you must cooperate with
everyone.
2. Designate a student facilitator who will conduct the discussion flow. The student
facilitator must be rotated every week.
3. Assign a student to present the salient features of the case:
a. Give the patients general data (age, sex, etc.)
b. Enumerate the important signs and symptoms of the patient
c. Give the diagnosis
4. Explain the important biochemical concepts related to the case. The biochemical
concepts are in your reading material. However, you may use other references for
this aside from the assigned reading material.
5. Explain the rationale for the treatment of the disease condition
6. Explain how the disease can be prevented
7. Assign other students to present your critical appraisal of the journal article. Be
sure to give your facilitator a copy of the article in advance. Answer the following
questions in your appraisal:
a. Summarize the content of your article
b. What kind of article is it? (Review article, RCT, Cohort, Case control, case
series, etc.)
c. Are the results significant and valid?
d. Is there any source of bias?
e. How can this article help our patient in the case?
f. Are there any ethical/social implications in the case?
8. You may use your laptop/tablet or better yet, use manila paper for illustrations
9. Create a one-page illustration on the important learning you had from your case.
Be ready to explain this to everyone. Store these learnings in your portfolio.
10. Be ready for an exam
CRITERIA FOR GRADING:
Coherence of presentation 50%
Ability to answer questions 30%
Group participation 20%
A peer evaluation will be conducted at the end of the semester by your colleagues,
so be cooperative!
