E-During our large group instruction, students and I talked about roads and what they knew
about roads. I showed them several pictures of different roads that included dirt roads, gravel
roads, paved roads, tunnels, and bridges.
F-After this discussion, I broke students into groups of three to create their own roads using
various materials that I provided them: ribbon, pipe cleans, small blocks, Popsicle sticks, and
paper.
Reflection on artifact (what went right, what went wrong, how to make better)
This activity worked really well with the students. They were able to activate their prior
knowledge and then were given an opportunity to work together with their peers to create
whatever type of roads what they would like. While they were working, I walked around to see
what they were creating and reminded that it takes many different people to build roads, so not
just one person should do all the work.
