Collection Evaluation and Development Plan
Description of the Site
The school that I chose to evaluate for this assignment is North La Fayette Elementary
School (NLE) which is located in Walker County, Georgia in the city of La Fayette. It is one of
nine elementary schools in the county. NLE is a Title I school and serves approximately 534
students in grades Pre-K through 5. The students racial backgrounds are 83% white, 6%
African-American, 6% multiracial, 4% Hispanic and 1% Asian. Approximately 6% of students
have been identified as having disabilities, 5% of students are in Early Intervention Programs,
and approximately 14% of students are gifted. According to CRCT statistics for the 2011-2012
school year, 92.3% of students met/exceeded the Reading/Language Arts standards and 86.8%
met/exceeded the Mathematics standards. 45% exceeded the standards in Reading, 39%
exceeded in Language Arts, 39% exceeded in Mathematics, 45% exceeded in Science, and 29%
exceeded in Social Studies. There is a staff of 64, with 34 of those being teachers, 2
administrators, 1 academic coach, 1 counselor, 1 secretary, 1 receptionist, 1 clerk/media
paraprofessional, 1 parent involvement coordinator/RTI interventionist, 1 nurse, 9
paraprofessionals, 1 media specialist, and 1 speech pathologist.
The size of the library collection was difficult to assess. There were a lot of books and
materials in the collection that were not catalogued, so there was really no way to tell the actual
size of the collection.

Beth Mashburn
CEDP

I chose to focus on two social studies state standards that address the Civil War and
Restoration for fifth grade. There are four fifth grade teachers at NLE. One teacher focuses on
science and social studies. At the present time, there are 88 fifth grade students at NLE. Ten of
those students are special needs and there are no ESOL students. The students reading levels
range from 1.2 up to 10th grade. I did attempt to discuss with the social studies teacher some of
the assignments and projects that she uses to teach these standards, but unfortunately she did not
get the information to me after my attempts.

Collection Evaluation
When I first approached the school library media specialist about this project, she looked
at the standards I was going to address and said she would pull some things for me to evaluate.
She did and was very willing to help me with that and I was appreciative, but I knew that I
needed to use the OPAC to search for relevant material myself. However, the problem with
using the OPAC is that it may tell you they have the book, but actually locating that book is a
little more difficult. All of the Accelerated Reader books, both fiction and nonfiction, are
shelved together by reading level. So the computer may say they have the book, but to find it
one must search through shelves of books that have been re-shelved by students. There is a
biography section, and then there is also an Accelerated Reader biography section. I found
myself actually searching shelf by shelf for relevant books. Another problem that I ran into was
that several of the books were not catalogued or barcoded. Those books could not be checked
out. I can imagine it must be very difficult for teachers trying to use the library resources. I feel
like students need to be able to enter the library, search for their book or topic on the computer,
and then the computer tell them exactly where to locate the book they want. Unfortunately, that
is difficult in this particular media center.
To gather my materials for evaluation, I used the materials the media specialist pulled for
me and as I stated before, I searched the shelves book by book. I also did searches on the OPAC.
This media center uses Alexandria and some of the search terms that I used were civil war,
slavery, states rights, Gettysburg, Abraham Lincoln, Harpers Ferry, Fort Sumter, Atlanta
Campaign, Shermans March to the Sea, Robert E. Lee, Ulysses S. Grant, Jefferson Davis,

Beth Mashburn
CEDP

Thomas Stonewall Jackson, 13th, 14th, 15th Amendments, Freedmens Bureau, and Jim Crow.
The searches did give me results, but no real help in actually locating the books.
What I found from my evaluation was a range of books from very old and outdated and
worn to brand new. There was a pretty good variety of books but there were some areas that
were lacking. There were no E-Books and not enough titles in any of the categories. Most of the
biographies were Abraham Lincoln and Robert E. Lee. There was not much information on
Uncle Toms Cabin or Harpers Ferry. There was also not much found on the Atlanta Campaign
or Jefferson Davis and Stonewall Jackson. I did not find very much information about the 13th,
14th, and 15th Amendments, the Freedmens Bureau, or Jim Crow laws. Below is a summary of
what I found.

Summary of the Collection Needs

Both the media specialist and the fifth grade social studies teacher expressed concerns
that it is difficult to find resources that are relevant and useful and are in the appropriate reading
levels. Most of the collection is at the appropriate level and I will attempt to purchase materials
at grade level, as well as slightly above and slightly below grade level to accommodate deficient
and accelerated learners.
After reviewing the standards and looking at what the collection currently consists of, I
can see that there are a few areas where the collection is lacking. I will attempt to purchase as

Beth Mashburn
CEDP

many materials as possible to correlate with the standards I chose. I will look for materials that
discuss Harriet Beecher Stowe, John Brown, slavery, some major battles, Shermans March to
the Sea, key people such as Ulysses S. Grant, Jefferson Davis, and Thomas Stonewall Jackson,
Reconstruction, the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments, the Freedmens Bureau, and Jim Crow laws
and customs.
Some of the current collection is outdated. I will try to purchase materials that have been
published since 2005. I will purchase a wide variety of materials such as fiction and nonfiction
books, E-Books, DVDs, CDs, Audiobooks, and Playaways. I will also look for Spanish
materials, as well as womens and multicultural points of view.
Below you will find the materials order that I have compiled. I have also created a wiki
that provides links to relevant resources for teaching the Civil War and Restoration.
