Dear MISD Parents and Students:

MISD has put together a handout for parents and students regarding school bus safety. The goal
of the Bus Rider Safety handout is to help provide a safe and enjoyable experience for students
who ride school buses. The handout provides the following information:

Bus danger zone diagram

Safety tips for departing the bus

Parents should take the time to read and discuss the materials in the handout with their children.
Riding a bus is a privilege provided by the school district and should be treated as such. MISD
requests that parents complete the attached Student Information and Bus Rider Safety Contract.
This contract provides information regarding:

Important student information

Acceptable student conduct while on the bus
Prohibited items
Consequences for misconduct

By signing this contract parents and students acknowledge their understanding and compliance
of the bus rules. Please sign and return the contract to your childs bus driver within three school
days.
If you have any questions or concerns please contact me at the MISD administrative offices at
(940) 372-3894 ext. 1234.

Sincerely,

Morgan Dungan

Safety!
Each year more students are hurt while they are
departing the bus than while they are riding inside
one. Students need to be aware that each school bus is
surrounded by a danger zone. The danger zone, as
shown below, is the area around the bus where the bus
driver cannot see the students once they have departed. It is very important that students avoid
walking within 10 feet of the bus on all sides, especially the front, and the right rear of the bus. If you
cannot see the bus driver, the bus driver cannot see you. Be safe!

Safety Tips for

Students and
Parents
Parents

Let your children know that if they

drop anything and it goes under the
bus they are not to try and go get it.

Let them know that after the bus

leaves you will try and get the items
dropped.

Let your children know that if they leave something on the bus they can get it from the lost and
found at school.

Ask your children to follow the bus drivers instructions while riding on the bus. They are to sit
quietly in their seats and not cause any distraction to the bus driver.

Students

Stay seated until the bus is completely stopped and the door has been opened.

Wait for your turn to leave the bus. No pushing or crowding.

Use the handrail and take one step as a time when leaving the bus.

Take five giant steps away from the bus when getting off. Doing this will get you out of the
danger zone.

Cross in front of the bus and make sure you can see the bus driver and the bus driver can see
you.

Stay clear of the bus when the engine is started. Do not chase or hang onto the bus at any time.
