rchimedes is said to have invented this simple way to pump water to a
higher level. It was actually widely used in ancient times. Wrap a rubber tube around a rod or piece of pipe, fastening it down with tape, as shown. When the lower end of the pipe or rod is placed in a bowl of water and rotated, the water will travel up the tube to flow out the upper end into a basin held below it.
