Unit 1-Lesson 2: Exploration

By: Aaliyah Arpon

1. Is the adoption rate of communication technology increasing or decreasing?
Cite specific evidence.
The adoption rate of communication technology is increasing. On the graph,
it showed that it took 6 years for the MP3 players to reach 50% of homes and
it took the telephone 71 years to do that same thing. MP3 players are a more
recent invention and they have taken less time to become popular and used
amongst a large group of people.

2. Why do you believe the current communication technology is adopted at a

faster rate? Cite specific evidence.
The current communication technology is adopted at a faster rate because
these current communication technologies have become more common,
efficient and available. When an old invention like the telephone came out, it
was the first of its kind, so people were more skeptical of the product. Current
communication technologies nowadays are more common to be in use. In the
chart, it was showed that I took 71 years for the telephone to reach 50% of
homes, while it only took MP3 players, which are newer inventions, 6 years.

3. Based on the graphic, can you generally predict how long it took current
communication technologies like Google, Twitter, and Facebook to reach 10
million users?
Based on the graph, I can predict that technologies like Google, Twitter, and
Facebook most likely took less time than any of the other inventions on the
graph did to reach 10 million users. I can predict this because the more new a
current communication technology is, the faster it will become used by more
people.

4. As technology advances, does technology become more or less complex?

Why?
As technology advances, it becomes more complex due to new innovations
and discoveries that are found in order to make the current technology better
or more efficient.

5. As technology advances, do people become more or less specialized in the

things they do for a living? Cite examples.

In general, the advancement of technology causes people to become more

specialized in the things they do for a living. People become more specialized
in their professions because technology is used to make things easier and
more productive. The use of technology allows people to become better at
their jobs and complete more. For instance, people who produce clothes can
make clothing faster and make more at a time due to technology.

6. As technology advances, do the tools and processes we use to make, build,

and do things become more efficient (become faster and require less
material, energy, and fewer people)? Cite examples.
As technology advances, the tools and processes used to make, build, and do
things become more efficient. Technology is utilized in order to make things
easier and more efficient. For instance, a technology such as a car makes it
easier to get from place and its faster, as opposed to walking or riding a bike.
Another example would be a cell phone because they allow information to be
shared in a faster and more efficient way.

7. As technology advances, does it require science and math applications? Cite

examples.
Science and math applications is still required as technology advances.
Science and math are required in order to advance technology and make it
better. For instance, in order to make airplanes and make them more
efficient, you must understand the science behind what makes them able to
fly. Also, in order to make cars faster or more efficient in other ways, you
must understand the science behind what allows cars to perform certain
tasks.

8. Define the term Invention:

Invention: any new product or process that is created.

9. Define the term Innovation:

Innovation: anything that is used to make an existing product or process
better or more efficient.
