Action Plan for Group CE3

Topic: Feasibility of Transfer Stations to improve efficiency of SWM System.
Areas of Interest:
1. Solid Waste Management System in Trinidad & Tobago
- Research information as it relates to the current practices involved in the collection and
disposal (i.e. transportation) of solid waste in T&T, including quantity of the waste collected
over some time period (daily, weekly, monthly, yearly) and other relevant information such as
transportation cost. Current status of all landfills have to be known as well. Level of recycling
and methods currently employed.
2. Transfer Stations
- Research design considerations for transfer stations (found in USEPA Handbook pages 1-18)
- Find land use data for T&T and correspond to EPA guidelines for locating a transfer station
3. Integrated Solid Waste Management/ Recycling/ Composting
- Research practices and standards for integrated solid waste management as well as recycling
and composting. Benefits and associated costs, as well as, required machinery and facilities.
- Research the design considerations for a processing station as well.
4. Future/Immediate/Prospective plans for SWM plans. An integrated solid waste plan is currently
being investigated. Confirm with Dr. Cooper for attempt to contact researcher for an interview.
Possible Solutions:
1. Design Solutions:
(a) One (1) transfer station with an attached processing station.
(b) One (1) transfer station with a processing station at some other location.
(c) Two (2) transfer stations each with an attached processing station.
(d) Two (2) transfer stations with a processing station at some other location
For alternatives (b) and (d) the proposed processing station will be located at the Forres Park Landfill.
2. Policy Solutions:
(a) The policy solutions for the SWM problems in Trinidad & Tobago can also be remedied at a
community level through the use of sound integrated solid waste management techniques.
Survey must include alternatives to transfer station, level of surface and site determination, and
opportunities
Collect report/SIP of waste collection frequency
