Dhan-trayodashi or Dhanteras is one of the five days of Diwali and takes place
two days before Diwali in honor of Dhanavantri, the physician of the gods and
an incarnation of Vishnu. Dhan means "wealth" and Trayodashi means 13th
day".

Narak Chaturdashi is the second day of Diwali. Legend has it that the demon
King Narakasur, defeated Lord Indra in a fierce battle. He then snatched the
glittering earrings of the Mother Goddess, Aditi . The evil demon king also
abducted and imprisoned sixteen thousand daughters of the Gods and Saints
in his harem. Upon hearing of the atrocities carried out by Naraksura,
Satyabhama entered the battlefield and after a fierce battle and divine intervention
from Lord Krishna, she successfully beheaded him. The imprisoned women were released and
Krishna offered to marry them to save their honor. As a symbol of victory of good over evil, Lord
Krishna smeared his forehead with Naraksuras blood. He returned home in the early hours of the
morning of Narak chaturdashi. The womenfolk massaged scented oil on his body and gave him a
good bath to wash away all the filth of the battle. Since then the custom of taking bath before
sunrise on this day has become a traditional practice especially in Maharashtra. It is interesting
to note that Bhudevi, mother of the slain Narakasura, declared that his death should not be a day
of mourning but an occasion to celebrate and rejoice.

Lakshmi Pooja, third day of Diwali, or the worship of the goddess of wealth, is
the main event on Diwali in North and West India. It is extremely important to
keep the house spotlessly clean and pure on Diwali. Goddess Lakshmi likes
cleanliness, and she will visit only the cleanest of houses first. This is also the
reason why the broom is worshiped on this day with offerings of haldi and
kumkum (turmeric and vermilion). Lamps are lit in the evening to welcome the
goddess.
Padwa, the day following the Amavasya of Diwali is Kartik Shuddh Padwa. Legend
has it that it was on this day that the powerful and most respected King Bali came
out of Pathal loka and Became ruler of Bhuloka as per a boon granted to him by
Lord Vishnu. Hence, it is also known as Bali Prtipada.
One unique aspect of Padwa is that it is symbolic of the love between a
husband and a wife. On this day, the very strong ties of matrimony are
celebrated as people invite young couples to their house for special meals. The
couple is also given presents. In older times, it was customary for the brother to
fetch his sister and brother-in-law and feed them in his own house to ensure
that he had good luck for the next year.
Bhau Bij is the day when brothers and sisters meet to express their love and
affection for each other. Diwali is not only a festival of lights and firecrackers
but also a festival to renew and strengthen relationships. In keeping with the
above, Bhau Bij is an important part of Diwali and is generally celebrated two
days after Diwali on Shukla Paksha Dwitiya' in the Hindi month of 'Kartik'.
It is the fifth and last day of Diwali
