Grade: 3 Subject: Art Date: October 15th, 2008

Objectives:
-Students will identify characteristics of animals physically and environmentally (habitat and
nutrition, etc.)

Evaluation:
-Observe students and make sure they understand the concepts and ideas

Materials and Aids:


-pictures of animals
-paper
-markers
-“It’s Not Easy Being a Bunny” (book)

Pre-requisite Knowledge:
-prior knowledge of animals and where they live

CEL’s:
-communication – group work
-critical and creative thinking – taking what they know and creating something new

Set:
-read story book to introduce animals
-explain that each animal has its own way of life

Development:
-hand out animal pictures to each student
-split into 7 groups of 3 and 1 group of 4
-students will create their own animal using pictures that were handed to them (have to
include at least one characteristic from each animal)
-students should:
-draw the animal using characteristics from pictures
-name the animal
-describe and draw the habitat and what the created animal eats

Closure:
-groups will share their created animals with the class
-talk about how each animal, whether real or imaginary, has its own habitat and way of life,
etc.

Target:
-group participation
-every student gets their chance to give their opinion.

Achieve Target:
-talk to every group
-ask everyone who has their hand up – don’t skip; don’t pick favourites
