This textbook is organized into 8 topics, consisting of 60 chapters, following the occupational structures of migrant workers provided by the
Human Resources Development Service of Korea. The preparation chapter helps with learning vowels and consonants of Korean characters and
basic greetings before starting. Each chapter is composed of occupational skills, vocabulary and grammar based on EPS-TOPIK and National
Competency Standards (NCS) and is divided into sections in the order of Conversation, Vocabulary and Expressions, Grammar, Practice, Activity,
Information and Culture, and EPS-TOPIK. The Conversation section shows a sample dialogue. The authentic dialogue introduces study objectives,
new vocabulary, and daily life situations that migrant workers face in their workplace. Vocabulary and Expressions introduces new words and
expressions with pictures and illustrations, so that learners can understand them with ease and interest. The Grammar section explains target
grammatical expressions that are closely related to the study objectives of each chapter. The Practice section provides various types of questions,
so that students will be able to review vocabulary, expressions, and grammar that are covered in each chapter. The Activity section helps students
to create authentic conversation using the newly introduced vocabulary, expressions, and grammar in the chapter. The Information and Culture
section helps with understanding general Korean culture and the unique workplace culture of Korea. EPS-TOPIK questions are also provided for testtakers at the end of each chapter. Below is the detailed explanation of the sections.

Authentic dialogues that migrant workers will perform in everyday life and/or in their workplaces are provided
with illustrations here. Each dialogue introduces new words and expressions, and targets grammatical
expressions that are covered in each chapter, so that learners will learn practical conversations with ease and
interest. Moreover, sample dialogues introduce various types of people that migrant workers will meet in real life
situations.

Vocabulary and Expressions provides the most frequently used words in situations that migrant workers will face
in everyday life and in workplace. New words and expressions are categorized and introduced by topic. As each
and every new word or expression comes with a picture or an illustration, students will effectively learn without
difficulty. New words and expressions are listed by frequency of use in daily life and workplace, and the fluency
level of speakers. They are also categorized by topic for the quick and easy search of words and expressions.
Furthermore, standard Korean words and expressions are introduced here as is recommended in workplaces.

Target grammatical expressions are introduced in context through authentic sample conversations, so that migrant
workers will be able to speak Korean more fluently and be better prepared for EPS-TOPIK. The concept of grammar
is provided both in Korean and English, which helps students to understand grammar more accurately. A couple
of examples show diverse usages of the expressions. Each chapter has only two grammatical expressions in order
to prevent students from being overwhelmed with grammar. Each grammatical expression explains modifications
with two or three sample sentences.

The Practice section intends to ensure that students understand new vocabulary and
grammatical expressions. Students will be able to practice vocabulary in Practice 1,
and grammatical expressions in Practice 2. Avoiding a simple, repetitive review of
words, this section helps students review vocabulary and grammar with ease and
interest by providing various types of practice in the form of a meaningful, contextbased approach.

Activity helps to practice creating topic-based conversations that learners will face in daily life using vocabulary,
expressions, and grammar covered in each chapter. Moreover, throughout the Activity section, migrant workers
will learn to demonstrate skills required by National Competency Standards (NCS) and articulate their thoughts and
opinions in specific situations. In some of the chapters, learners will practice finding information that they need
within the given passages.

The hottest days of summer (according to the lunar calendar) are called Bok Nal
and Koreans eat Samgyetang on these days. We are lacking in energy and vitality
from excessive sweating in summer, and we believe that such ingredients as
ginseng, chestnuts, and garlic will bring energy back. Try Samgyetang when you
feel exhausted on a sultry summer day.

What would Koreans eat on their birthday? We have many various, delicious types
of food including a birthday cake, but there is something that we will never miss.
That is seaweed soup. A mother eats seaweed soup after giving birth. Therefore, we
also eat seaweed soup on our birthday in order to pay tribute to our mother.

The Culture and Information section introduces general Korean culture, Korean workplace culture, information
about Korean society, and other necessary information for migrant workers. More importantly, the Culture and
Information sections of chapter 50 through chapter 60 include information concerning workplace-related laws
and legislations for migrant workers.

Koreans have traditionally conducted a life on the floor, and sitting on the floor has become a significant part of Korean
culture. Hence, Koreans usually do not wear shoes at home. Moreover, it is not difficult to find restaurants where people
need to take off their shoes in order to sit and eat on the floor.

There are honorific and informal forms in the Korean language. The honorific form is usually used when speaking to
someone who is older than the speaker. On the other hand, the informal form (casual speech) is commonly used when
speaking someone who is younger than the speaker. However, it is recommended that the speaker uses the honorific form
when s/he speaks to a person whom s/he first meets or to a person who is not close with the speaker. However, the casual
speech is also used when speaking to someone who is older than but is very close to the speaker.

Koreans tend to say Lets have a meal together next time, or Lets drink together when they say goodbye. They
also often say, Lets keep in touch, but these expressions are not so much promises that people take seriously as
idiomatic usages that people use as a way of saying farewell unless they schedule specific dates and time for the
appointment. In the meantime, it is recommended that you dont contact a person too early in the morning, too late
at night, and/or during mealtime or break even if s/he has said, You can come over any time.

Koreans usually invite their family members, and/or colleagues to their house after they move into a new place or get married.
It is called , a housewarming party. They invite people and prepare food for a housewarming, while the invitees prepare
gifts for the party. Detergent and toilet paper are very popular for gifts. The symbolic meaning of the detergent is wishing
good luck and wealth as if they make bubbles. Along the same line, toilet paper also symbolizes wishing good fortune.
More recently, people tend to buy presents that the host families want and need. Moreover, decorative items such as clocks
and flowers in vases are now very popular. People also give newly married couples cups and saucers, and spoon and chopstick
sets as gifts. Consider these possible gifts for your next housewarming.

Koreans tend to ask each others age. Many foreigners feel offended by this. However, it is not necessarily considered rude in
Korea, as Koreans use honorifics for someone who is older than they are. In addition to using honorifics, lets find out what other
manners you should follow when with the elderly.
When eating
-
Wait for the elderly to hold their spoon first.
-
Stay seated until the elderly finish their meal.
When drinking
-
Use both hands when receiving alcoholic beverages.
-
Drink only after the elderly drink.
-
Turn away and drink when drinking with the elderly.
-
Use both hands when receiving objects from the elderly.
Etc.
-
Bend your waist when greeting the elderly.
-
Do not smoke with the elderly.
-
Offer your seat to elderly when taking public transportation.

Buddhas Birthday
.
4 8
.
.
Buddhas birthday is a day that celebrates the birth of the Prince Siddhartha
Gautama. In Korea, Buddhas birthday is celebrated on the 8th day of the 4th
month in the lunar calendar. This is a national holiday, so schools and offices
are closed. As Buddhas birthday approaches, Buddhists make and hang lotus
lanterns all over temples and/or their houses and turn on the lights at night.
Christmas
.
. 12
.
.
Christmas is an annual commemoration of the birth of Jesus Christ. This is
one of the biggest holidays in Christianity. Nowadays, however, it is a widely
observed cultural holiday, regardless of ones religion. In December, people
start decorating Christmas trees and exchanging Christmas cards. Chidren
receive Christmas gifts as well.
Easter
.
.
.
Easter is a holiday celebrating the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.
Christians color and decorate hard-boiled eggs and share them with one
another. It is said that the custom of Easter eggs started because an egg is a
symbol of new life.
Ramadan
9 9 . 9
.
.
Ramadan, which means scorching heat or dryness, is during the ninth month
of the Islamic calendar. Muslims observe this as a month of fasting. The month
of Ramadan is considered the most sacred month of the Islamic calendar.
While fasting from dawn until sunset, Muslims refrain from consuming food
and drinking water. In addition to fasting, observing Ramadan also includes
recitation of the Quran and increased offerings of salat (prayers).

Korean banks have expanded services for foreigners. They charge fewer fees for migrant workers who send money to their
home countries, and also offer a wire transfer service that only takes 10 minutes, which normally takes one full business day.
Some branches located in expatriate communities such as Ulsan and Geoje run windows exclusively for foreign customers,
especially migrant workers. Moreover, eight different languages are provided at the ATMs, and international money transfer
and language services are available online 24 hours a day. A few banks operate some branches on Sunday for migrant workers
who normally work six days a week.

HUGKorea supports migrant workers and business owners who hire migrant workers. As multilingual consultations are
provided in the center, migrant workers who are not fluent in Korean find no difficulty in making inquiries. Phone consultation
and one-on-one consultation at the center are available. As for the phone consultation, you can leave you concerns, phone
number, and available hours on the website (www.hugkorea.or.kr), so one of the consultants may contact you. If you want to
visit the center, you should schedule an appointment beforehand.
