CASE STUDY #3

WHAT ELSE CAN I DO?

An act of informing higher authorities about illegal or unethical practices

observed is called whistle-blowing. Whistle-blowing is never easy decision for any
employee. This will bring both advantages and disadvantages to the employee. This will
cause to be terminated from work of his/her life will be put in danger. Being a
government employee, you should uphold the public interest over and above personal
interest. In doing this, the employee has to be firm and should have all the necessary
evidences before he has to do it. In the case of Glenda, yes, Glenda is right, she will not
prepare the paperwork to justify allowing the ACME Mining Company to start an openpit mining in an area where they have no time to do a proper environmental impact
study. The better thing that Glenda must do is to go first to the proper authorities. Maybe
she should go to the DENR because this is the proper agency to inform and consult
about the matter, because if she will go either to the press or to the politician, the issue
will just crate noise and will put her life in danger. The DENR has the knowledge on
what is the best thing to do regarding the matter. But if the proper authorities will not act
on it, then that is the time for her to go to the media or to an elected national official.
