What is Research

Research is the systematic process of collecting

and analyzing information (data) by which
investigation undertaken in order to discover new
facts.

“Research is a systematized effort to gain new

knowledge”. -Redman and
Mory.
Problem Formulation
A problem well defined is a problem half solved!

Failure to properly identify where you are headed and why will
inevitably lead you to wonder where you are and how you got there!
Problem Formulation

 Initial State
 The initial state of the problem, defined in a
suitable manner

 Operator(s)
 An action or a set of actions that moves the
problem from one state to another
Cont.……

 State Space
 The set of all states reachable from the
initial state
 Goal Test
 A test applied to a state which returns true
if we have reached a state that solves the
problem
 Path Cost
 How much it costs to take a particular path
Objectives of Research
 The purpose of research is to discover answers through the
application of scientific procedures.
 The objectives are:

 To gain familiarity with a phenomenon or to achieve new

insights into it – Exploratory or Formulative Research.
 To portray accurately the characteristics of a particular
individual, situation or a group – Descriptive Research.
 To determine the frequency with which something occurs or
with which it is associated with something else – Diagnostic
Research.
 To test a hypothesis of a causal relationship between
variables – Hypothesis-Testing Research.
