Unit Resources
1. Giant Eagle
a. 41 Towne Center Dr, Leechburg, PA 15656
b. (724)- 845-9298
c. While taking the students on a grocery store tour they can see what foods go onto
the shelves, why they go onto the shelves, who works there, etc. This will teacher
the students about economics. They can also see how money gets you products
from the store. Hopefully, this will encourage students to take part in dramatic
play of a grocery store.
2. Lower Burrell Police Department
a. 2800 Bethel St, Lower Burrell, PA 15068
b. (724) 339-4287
c. Having the students attend a field trip to the local police department shows them
who takes care of our community. While many people create the community,
these men and women are who keep us safe and able to live. The students could
ask the police officers questions about what their job consists of, learning their
role in the community
3. Lower Burrell Police Department
a. 2800 Bethel St, Lower Burrell, PA 15068
b. (724) 339-4287
c. REQUESTING A POLICE OFFICER TO COME INTO CLASS
d. If your school is unable to travel to go on field trips you can call the local police
department and ask an officer to come into your class to speak with the children.
Similar activities can happen, just like actually going to the police station;
however, the students remain in their classroom. This could even become an even
bigger opportunity for the rest of the elementary school where it becomes an
assembly where all students get to listen to the police officer talk about his role,
along with other officers, role of the community.
4. Derek Kotechki Memorial Park
a. 731 Wildlife Lodge Road

c. For a little history behind the parks name I would like to give a personal story
about my hometown. This park is only a few minutes from my house, where it
used to be called Wolfpack Park. A local, Lower Burrell, police officer was
killed on duty where the park was named in remembrance of this great officer.
This family spent a lot of their family time at this park, so the city renamed the
park after the fallen officer. When Officer Kotechki died the entire city went to
the funeral and we stood hand and hand down the main drag of Lower Burrell,
called Leechburg Road. With over 100s of people supporting this family it truly
shows how the community comes together to really be a family. If the students
were to go to the park, it could be possible for other police officers to come
forward and give this story to the students. It would have more of an impact on
them since it is coming from the source itself. These officers have witnessed this
event happen just a few years ago. This trip could be an opportunity for the
children to learn more about the police force and just about how important having
a close community can be. Learning about being good role models in the
community could really be taught through this type of field trip.
5. Daniel Boarts - Upper Burrell Volunteer Fire Department
a. 4370 7th Street Rd, New Kensington, PA 15068
b. (724) 335-0212
c. Having your local fire department involved in the students education is also
important, just like the police officers above. Having a very good friend as a
member of the Upper Burrell Fire Department, I could personally ask him to
come into my class and discuss with my students his role in the community. The
students will learn how many people come together to create a community. This
could also venture off into a fire safety lesson as well.

6. Upper Burrell Volunteer Fire Department
a. 4370 7th Street Rd, New Kensington, PA 15068
b. (724) 335-0212
c. Taking a field trip to your local fire station is more hands on and exciting for the
children than having the firemen/women come to the classroom. The students
will be able to see the trucks, sleeping spaces, and equipment used by these men
and women so they see more into the lives of these individuals. Just like they
would learn the role in community from an in-class visit, the students would learn
through a field trip where it is all right there in front of you. The students will
gain more visual knowledge of the equipment and truck that they may have never
had before.
7. Greensburg Hannas Town Revolutionary War site
a. 809 Forbes Trail Road, Greensburg, PA 15601
b. (724) 532-1935
c. When taking a field trip to Hannas Town students can take a tour where they will
learn about the daily life and events that went on during the American Revolution.
They can visit homes and war sites while learning many facts and details about
what happened during the American Revolution.
8. Westmoreland County Courthouse
a. 2 N Main St, Greensburg, PA 15601
b. (724) 830-3000
c. Going to the Westmoreland County Courthouse may be a field trip for the middle
to upper grade levels. I took a field trip to the courthouse my senior year of high
school while taking a Criminal Law course. I got to visit each level of the
courthouse and even got to speak with a judge and police officer from the
building. Students were invited to ask any questions they may have regarding
court issues. Like stated before, this would be a great field trip for the older
students.
9. Fort Ligonier

a. 200 S Market St, Ligonier, PA 15658
b. (724) 238-9701
c. Fort Ligonier is a place where students can go to learn about the French and
Indian War. While this trip may be for more upper elementary, such as sixth
grade, this is a great place for the students to get a first hand experience of what
these places looked like. While I went there in sixth grade we were able to view
forts, make leather bracelets, and eat the types of foods that were available at that
time. Having active learning is important for those students who have difficultly
sitting at desk all day long. So, going to view such places in person will excite
these students making them more willing and able to pay attention and learn.
10. Peoples Library
a. 880 Barnes St, New Kensington, PA 15068
b. (724) 339-1021
c. Visiting your local library gives students the confidence to keep reading. At the
Peoples Library in New Kensington you can take tours of the library and learn
how to find book in that library. I know, for me, I was and still am awful at
finding books inside of a library. While learning together as a whole class at the
library the students can help one another. The library is a beautiful place for
learning that students need to be able to know how to use. Visiting the local
library is beneficial to the students.
