This letter urges North Carolina state legislators to initiate an increase in the state's minimum wage from $7.25 per hour. It argues that the current minimum wage is not keeping up with rising costs of living, as families working full-time at minimum wage earn only $1,256.67 per month, which is not enough to pay basic expenses like rent, food, transportation, and childcare. The letter contends that raising the minimum wage would help reduce poverty and stimulate the local economy as low-income families would have more to spend on essential goods and services.

February 14, 2016 Diona Covington 110 Piney Pointe Drive Dpc006@bravemail.uncp.edu 910-894-3960 Dear Senator McInnis and Representatives Goodman and Pierce: I urge you to initiate economic justice by initiating an increase in North Carolinas hourly minimum wage. Minimum wage increases are not reflecting consumer costs today. The minimum wage in North Carolina is currently at $7.25 an hour and families are continuing to struggle with one individual working 40 hours a week for a monthly income of just $1256.67 per month. These families struggle to pay rent and utilities, buy food, provide transportation to low wage paying jobs, and provide day care expenses to be able to attend these jobs paying $7.25 per hour. These families do not even have the income to buy basic necessities such as toilet paper and soap, that SNAP benefits do not provide. Enacting a higher minimum wage would fight poverty and benefit the economy. Families would be able to spend the increased wages by buying essential and basic needs, that they previously have not been able to thus stimulating the local economy. Overall, ensuring that a individual who works full time is able to provide for his or her family will combat the rising inequality in wages. Please consider enacting an increase in minimum wages in the state of North Carolina. Thank for your time in considering this request. Sincerely, Diona Covington Diona Covington
