The tabulation of nearly 47,000 cases shows the most common rectal affections in
the following order; hemorrhoids, fistula, fissure, ulcer and pruritus. Each of these is
considered from the viewpoint of the general practitioner. The details as to etiology,
pathology, symptoms, diagnosis, complications and treatment, are given, besides a full
account of the author's "open" method which enables onq to operate in the doctor's office
under local anesthesia.
A full account of the injection plan. is given, as well as palliative measures for cases
inoperable for any reason, such as pregnancy or accompanying cancer.
Office treatment is considered at great length and is based on a practice of hundreds
of cases. Pre- and post-operative treatment is thoroughly elaborated.
Many pages are devoted to constipation, the dietetic physio-therapeutic, or operative
measures for its relief.
Due emphasis has been laid on the symptoms of cancer, mode of detecting it, best

methods of prevention or prophylaxis.


This book, we emphasize, is written for the general practitioner and is a master's instruction in the problems which daily arise. The subject is fully covered in one volume,
and is handsomely illustrated. The author was one of the founders of the Proctological
Society. He has done iiiuch original research and has devised many instruments for
diagnosis and treatment.
