This poem describes how Angelou has overcome all the obstacles in her way because of her skin color. She
asks if she offended other people because she became strong and independent. Angelou states that people
tried to weaken her and break her down, but in the end she rose above all of her hardships.

Content / CM / Meaning? / Theme(s)?

The theme of this poem is to be strong and courageous. Because Angelou was strong and confident in herself,
she was able to overcome those that oppressed her. Angelous story has an underdog tone to it. She was
looked down upon because of her ethnicity, but she was able to overcome her adversities and become the
successful woman she is today.

The poem uses many different similes to emphasize how strong Angelous will to be successful is. The poem
also alternates between verses to show what she had to overcome, and how strong she is. The word rise
was repeated multiple times to show how much stronger the poet has become.

Commentary: Why like? Poetic Traits? Relevance / Connections / Allusions (Lit, Bib, Myth, Histor, Other) / Relevance
to personal experience, 20Qs? etc.)?

I enjoy this poem because it portrays an underdog like story. Angelou had to overcome the society around her
to become who she is today. She is strong willed and will always stand up for what she believes to be right
and just. I find it poetic how Angelou is using her poetry to tell her audience to be strong and brave and to
overcome any hardships in their life.
