Factors Affect The Rate Of Substitution

Size of Metal ion

Charge on metal ion
Size of incoming ligand
Charge on the incoming ligand
Size & charge on leaving group
Trans effect

Size of Metal ion

Large size so that the association with incoming
ligand will be easy

Charge on metal ion

Charge on metal ion should be greater which
will assist in association with incoming
ligand

Size of incoming ligand

Size of incoming ligands be smaller so that it
can approach the metal ion very closely &
easily

Charge on the incoming ligand

To have a maximum interaction between
incoming ligand & metal ion charge on
ligand should be greater

Size & charge on leaving group

Leaving group should be small to make its
departure easy

Trans effect
