FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE

ALLITERATION
the repetition of the same
consonant sound at the
beginning of a group of
consecutive or closely
connected words

ONOMATOPOEIA

a word that imitates the


sound it is describing.

FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE
Language that goes beyond the
literal meaning of words in order to
give the reader a different
perspective about an idea or
subject.

PERSONIFICATION
giving an animal, idea, or
inanimate object human or
life-like characteristics.

IMAGERY
words that create a mental
picture by appealing to the five
senses - what you see, smell,
taste, hear, and feel.

SIMILE
a comparison of two different
things that have something in
common using the words
'like' or 'as'.

METAPHOR
a creative comparison;
something used to represent
something greater; an emblem; a
symbol.

HYPERBOLE
an extreme exaggeration
used to make a point.

SYMBOL
An object, person, action,
or situation that
represents more than
itself.

LITERAL LANGUAGE
Means exactly what it
says.
