Brake lines

You get a fire for sure if you tow

the EL with the air supply and
hand brake control lines crossed
in the XM757.
That is, you set the EL ablaze if
you manage to get it out of the
parking lot. Trailer service
brakes lock immediately when
the 2 lines in the truck are
crossed.
If that's the case, your shop just
may h ave crossed the 2 lines without knowing it - while
following the info in TM
9-2320-230-20 (Apr 69) to put in
a n ew tractor-tra il er protection
valve.
The brake line hookup at the
protection valve is wrong in both
Fig. 2-231 and Fig. 2-340 of the
TM. The right hookup is in TB
43-0001-39-3 (Oct 77). The TB
also tells your sh op how to doublecheck the hookup without the

valve.
You may have a bad hand
brake valve ifyour truck's got the
valve that came with it.
A disk at the base of that old
valve may be cracked. That lets
air seep into the trailer service
brake system.
Air in the system slowly puts
on the brakes and locks 'em without warning - while you're
towing the EL. You can drag the
EL into a fire before you know it.
If you t hi nk the truck may
have an old valve, replace it . New
valves with the cracks worked
out of 'em are in t he supply sustem.

Pershing Power Station . . .

Clean Battery Change

Be extra careful when you change batteries in the Pershing power station.

That's because the station uses 2 12-volt batteries - either 2 nickel

cadmium or 2 lcad acid batteries -to power the components that launch
the missile.
Ne ver mix one type of battery with the other. The chemicals in those
batter ies clash; the lead-acid will destroy th e nickel cadmium
Throw away that grease you've
been using on cold days to keep
the skin of your Pershing missile
from sticking to the EL-ErectorLauncher - boom.
That's righ t, there's a better
lube. It's called flourosilicone oil,
NSN 9150-01-042-4902.
Th at oil works every day,
whether cold or very hot - wh en
the grease can turn to g lue. That
leads you straight to a NO-GO,
with t he missile skin stuck to the
EL boom .
Th get rid of your sticky problem, pour some fluorosilicone oil
on a dry, clean cloth and rub it
over the rubber cushions in the
missile cradle. The word's in

lead-acid batteries-NSN 6 140-00-057-2554.
When you switch from one type co the other, clea n the battery area in tha t
station thoroughly. Just a trace of lead-acid is bad news.
To gee the battery area sparkling, follow para 4-42a in TM 5-1450-204- J2

Otherwise, you may end up with 2 dead batteries, a dead power station and
a missile sys te m that won't work.

Picture a delicate, beautiful
piece of fine crystal.
You'd be extra careful not to
bump, bang or stumble into it. 1b
do so would be to smash it.
Much the same goes for the
reference assemb ly in your AN/
TSQ-110 azimuth laying set
which you use to aline the Persh ing missile to its target.

Handle

with care

A bump or bang probably won't

smash your assemb ly - or even
knock it over - but a good punch
to t he assembly is sure to KO the
north seeking gyroscope.
'Cou rse, you can't h urt the gyro
too much if you stumble and fall
into your reference assemb ly
when the gyro's caged. What you
don't want lo d o is to bump or

You can trip over the tripod

When packing, handl e the assembly li ke a newborn baby. Sli p
it out of the azim uth reference

its container just like it says in
para 3-10 of TM 9-1430-383-14

The word in para 3-10 is meant
to safeguard th e glass in the AOL

wild but de! icate gyro.

Withou t t h e gyro, t h e computers in t he programmer-test

station can't get a reading on true

fixed poi nt for alining t he missile
to the target.
To keep the gyro spinning and
turning, handle yo u r assemb ly
with kid g loves - and watch
your big feet - when the gyro's
uncaged. It's easy to trip over a
leg on t he azimuth ieference unit
tripod.
Besides that,just a little rough
stuff is sure to crunch the gyro if
it's uncaged after sh utting down

Pershing Actuator Cables ...

LOOK OUT, MYRTLE.:
HERE "THEY GO

AGAIN.'

Wanta keep your Pershing

missile on target and out of your
back yard?
Check the cables.
The missile !lies right only
when electrical cables are hooked
up right on those 6 h ydraulic actuators - 3 each on both the first
and second stage.
If support turns just 2 of the cables aro und , you get inflight
course correction trouble with a
,~~1\
capital T
For instance, a wrong hookup a t the No. 2 and 3 actuators in either the
first or second stage makes the missile go left instead ofright - or right
instead of left. Here's how:
The computer feeds the right course correction info to the actuators.
But the actuators - through the wrong cable h ookup - tell the jet and
air vanes that steer t he missile to go the other way.
'lb keep the missile on course:
Check the cable hookup at t he 6 actuators during both your in itial and
semiannual maintenance checks. The word on that is in Tobie 4-2 and
4-3 - Service Upon Receipt and Semiannual Preventive Maintenance
Service - on both the first and second stage in TM 9-1410-380-12 (May
73).
10

#2 & #3 Actuators controlling

these vanes get cables crossed up

10W2P7 and 10WIP5 cables must

go to J2 &JJ jacks on curbside actuator #3

Double-check the hookup at the No. 2 and 3 actuators on both the first
and second stage. That's where most of the trouble lies.
b 'Cour se, you know support lays those cables- but it's more than easy
to turn the main cable around. That means you get a correct cable
hookup at actuator No. 1 but not at actuators No. 2 and 3.
To make sure support's got 'em right, check t he hookup for those 2
actuators against Tobie 5-1, Con nections for Hydraulic Actuators, in
your -12 TM. Check out t he hookup on each of those 3 actuator lines.
lfyou find a mistake, call support to take those cables out and rework
'em before you take that missile to th e firing line. Otherwise, you get to
tear that missile down-at best - or have it land in your backyard - at
worse.
Then, keep an eye peeled for 2 very importa nt additions - a new
break-out box and a new cable assembly.

BREAK-OUT BOX: The box - now being fiBl<led - will let you
take a last-min ute, firing line peek at those cable hookups. That way,
you can at least tell iflhe cables are hooked up wrong - before that
missile's fired.
CABLE ASSEMBLY: The assembly, when fi elded, will make it impossible for support to lay th ose cables wrong.
