Whats up in 247???

Hello Families! Students have been working very hard as we finish up our first units. As we
move on to our second unit of study we will be focusing on the key question of how one cause can
have multiple effects. Thank you for your continued support at home!

Math- In math students have begun their second unit this week on multiplication. We are currently
building a foundation for multiplication. Students are applying their understanding of place value
from the previous unit to new concepts. In this unit, students will be learning how to effectively use
several different methods to multiply two multi-digit numbers. As we learn each method, example
sheets will be sent home with students to assist with homework.

Reading- In reading, we continue to work on both fiction and non-fiction texts. In this unit, we will
be focusing on referring to details in the text and using text based evidence to justify our thinking.
Inferencing is another major area of focus, students are encouraged to draw conclusions using what
they know about a topic and apply understanding of the text to come together and make an
inference. We also have begun taking a look at how authors use point of in text and how it can
affect a story.

Writing- Students wrapped up their first mini opinion writing unit. We are currently starting a
writing piece based off of a story we have read. In reading, students read a story about Orphan
Trains. Students have been assigned a child to research who was on an Orphan on one of these
trains in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Students will then take their research and apply it to a
written journal. Students will write journal entries from the point of view of their rider.

Science- In science, students are beginning our first science unit on sound. Students will learn
about sound waves as well as how sound travels. Next, we will begin to study light and how light
behaves.
