Thoseinterestedinbecomingavolunteermustattendanorientationsessionto
learnaboutthevariousopportunitiesavailablefollowedbyatouroftheshelter.
Inadditiontothegeneralorientation,volunteerswhowishtoworkdirectlywith
thedogsorcatswillberequiredtoattendtheappropriatedogorcattraining
programrelativetothetypeofvolunteerworktheychoose.Oncethespecific
trainingprogramhasbeencompleted,newvolunteerswillbepairedwithaLead
Volunteerforaonetoonementoringsessionbeforebeingallowedtoworkwith
theanimalsunsupervised.

Theminimumagetovolunteeris18yearsoldinordertolead/controlanimals.
Sheltervolunteersthatareunder18yearsofagemustvolunteerwiththeir
parentorlegalguardian,whoshallalsobeasheltervolunteerandbeincontrol
oftheanimal(s)atalltimes.Theseyouthvolunteersmustbewiththeirparentor
legalguardianinordertointeractwithanimalsinsidethedogpark,homeagain
room,catroomandinothercontrolledenvironments.

Aparentorlegalguardianisrequiredtosignpaperworkforvolunteersunder18
yearsofage.Wereservetherighttoreleaseavolunteerunder18yearsofage
fromhisorhervolunteerpositionifwefeelthesituationispotentiallyunsafefor
thechildortheanimals.

Volunteersshouldleaveallvaluableslockedinvehiclestrunkorathome.The
LITTLEPAWSisnotresponsibleforlost,stolenordamagedpersonalproperty.

Inordertoeasilyidentifyvolunteerswhoworkinpublicareas,wesuggestthe
purchaseandwearingofanLITTLEPAWSVolunteerTshirt.Thecostis
approximately$10andmaybepurchasedorspecialorderedthedayof
orientation.Youmustwearanamebadgeifyouchoosetonotpurchasea
Tshirt.

WerequirethatinsheltervolunteersenterthroughtheShelterLobbyandlog
inoutdaily.

SmokingisnotallowedintheShelterdogparksorneartheSheltersentranceor
exitdoors.Volunteersmustonlysmokeindesignatedarea(seeanLITTLE
PAWSSupervisor).

Volunteersmustbepoliteandhelpfulatalltimes.Allpeopleandanimalsareto
betreatedwithrespectandcourtesy.Fortheirownsafetyandinthebest
interestoftheanimals,volunteersmustadheretotherulesexplainedinthe
trainingasitpertainstoanimalshandling.

AccidentsorinjuriestoapersonmustbereportedtoanLITTLEPAWS
Supervisorimmediately.

VolunteersarerequiredtoaccepttheguidanceanddecisionsoftheVolunteer
TeamMemberresponsiblefortheparticularvolunteeractivityinwhichyouare
participating.Problemsanddisagreementsshouldbebroughttotheattentionof
anLITTLEPAWSSupervisorortheVolunteerTeamLead.

Volunteersareconsideredextremelyvaluable.However,avolunteerwillbe
disqualifiedfromfurtherparticipationforunsafepractices,misconductorfailure
tofollowrulesandpolicies.

SheltervolunteerhoursareMondaySaturday,10:30AM5:30PMand
Sunday,10:30AM5PM.VolunteersmustleavetheShelterbytheendof
volunteeringhourstoallowShelterstaffadequatetimetofinishtheirdutiesand
preparetoclose.

Volunteersworkinghandsonwiththeanimals:(1521)

Itissuggestedthatafterthree(3)consecutivemonthsorlongerabsencefrom
volunteeringhandsonwiththeanimals,insheltervolunteersshouldcheckin
withaShelterSupervisororaLeadVolunteer.Theywillprovideyouinformation
aboutanychangesduringyourabsence.Ifyouchoose,youmayretakethe
inshelter,doghandlingportionoftheorientation.

Volunteersareonlyallowedtoworkwithanimalsfromthepublicaccess
areasMainKennel,theSmallDog/PuppyRoomandtheCatRooms.

Guestsofvolunteersarenotallowedtoworkhandsonwiththeanimals.Please
limitthenumberofguestsduringyourvolunteerworkinghours.

Inordertosafelycontroltheshelterdogs,anLITTLEPAWSapprovedsliplead
mustbeused.ExceptionsmustbeapprovedbyaShelterSupervisororLITTLE
PAWSVeterinarian.

Workingwithanimalsrequiresthekindofattirethatyouwouldweardoingany
workwhereyoucouldgetdirty,wet,muddy,orevenscratched.Suchitemsas
shortshorts,lowcuttops,sandals,anddanglingjewelryaddtotheriskof
injuries.WhenyouareattheShelteroranLITTLEPAWSeventasavolunteer,
youareanagentoftheLITTLEPAWStothepublic.Appropriateattireisa
MUST.

Volunteersarerequiredtocleanupafterthemselvesreturningallsuppliesto
theirproperlocations.Volunteersworkingwithanimalsarerequiredtocleanup
aftertheanimalswithwhomtheyveworkedreturningallsuppliestotheirproper
locations.

InjuryorillnessofananimalmustbereportedtoanLITTLEPAWSSupervisor
immediatelyandrecordedonanAccident/InjuryFormavailableintheShelter
Lobby.
