Title: The influence of density on local community diversity, using Drosophila species

as study system
Rationale:
Drosophila species, better known as vinegar flies, are common model organisms for
genetic research. However, their ecology and natural history have not been well
studied. Their community structure varies in different regions and seasons. With the
investigation of biodiversity of local Drosophila species will help us to get a better
understanding their community ecology in North America.
Research question: Whether biodiversity of Drosophila species vary across different
seasons and among different geographic areas.
Procedures:
1. Two species of Drosophila were collected in different states including using
peaches.
2. Drosophila are preserved in different vials containing 95% ethanol separated based
on region and time. In each vial, they were separated into groups based on their
species.

Data Analysis:
The number of Drosophila collected is summed up and the numbers of Drosophila in
each group are also calculated. The percentage of the number of flies in each species
are calculated. The relationship between the encapsulation rate in each region and
the population density of the Drosophila is investigated. We will run statistic analysis
later.
