CORE COMPETENCY 3 Advance Human Rights and Social, Economic, and Environmental Justice
PRACTICE BEHAVIOR 3.1
Apply understanding of social, economic, and environmental justice to advocate for human rights at the individual and system level. Learn how NHC Mauldin is funded and how funds are utilized effectively for patient availability. We should always consider what can be done to improve patient care and patient wellness. By learning what justices are in place for patients, we can better assist them and give direct care.
PRACTICE BEHAVIOR 3.2
Engage in practices that advance social, economic, and environmental justice.
Matching patients with available resources that
may help them increase productivity in their lives. Also making sure the patient is comfortable in the place they are in.
HOW I HAVE USED THIS COMPETENCY
I have been able to use competency 3.1 by observing my supervisors in working with patients who have experienced discrimination and oppression. Empathy was shown to them by the supervisors to ensure that they were adequately cared for. I have been able to use this competency by shadowing with the NHC admissions department. I was able to see how Medicare effects patients negatively and positively. Unfortunately, some patients are often turned away from NHC due to the fact that they do not have Medicare. Those who can not afford the rate of to stay in a room, are referred to other facilities.
