Dear Joy,

Thanks -for your letter in-forming us o-f the -folks who had recently used our sl ide
programs. Ue had hoped to get new video -footage while the Berrys were here, but'
I guess you heard about the video being stolen. Uhen we do get some new
materials, we''ll have Mom and Dad send you a copy. I^m enclosing a l ittle news
-from the past year, and I will try to send you a copy o-f the thank-you letters we
send out bi-monthly. Again, thanks -for all you do for us missionaries.
Seems unbel ievable that '88 is history, where has it gone? It has been a very
good year for us, all things considered. Even though it started out with Bonita
being very sick, we can look back and see a lot of positive things that have
happened. Ule attended a Beginning Translation workshop which has proved helpful.
We finally finished getting a couple of papers on Botin grammar ready for
publ icationthat was a chore! Sam and Nadine Reed spent three weeks with us,
Sam going over the Genesis Joseph story with me in Hebrew and left me with a
verse by verse exegesis and the plans of working with him on other Old Testament
projects. Our computer man, Jeff Wilhoit spent three weeks with us introducing
us to our new computer and the wonder of MS-DOS computingwe're still reel ing a
bit from that, and will probably always be in awe of what the machine can do and
how confusing it can be. It has proved to be a very important asset to our work.
We have also Just about finished the renovations we started on the old homestead

we started a couple of years ago, and had put on the "do It on Saturday for a

break from the translation work." We Just got tired of seeing all that needed to
be done, and took a couple of weeks out to complete It. Our translation of the
Joseph story has taken longer than we ever anticipated. But we to the point that
we see the end.

Hopefully, we will be ready for a consultant to come and check

It in February.

Then we will be beginning the translation of Luke, which we hope

to complete in 1989.

We have started a new era in the education of the boys.

I mostly work with Jesse.

I am helping nma.

It allows Bonita to be able to be involved in our

language ministry, which Is very important, and reaping good benefits. Our
helpers are improving in their skills and are able to work more on their own,
which helps. So far it is working our pretty well.
Josh has been diagnosed as having a learning disabil ity in regard to
reading, so my working with Jesse all(M<is Bonita to work exclusively with Joshua,
and that is working out very well. He seems to be Improving. We wi ll making
periodic trips to Ukarumpa, the Wycl iffe center in the highlands, to consult with
the learning special ist who has been such a help to us. That way we'll be able
to measure his progress and delete strategies that aren't proving helpful, as
well as getting other materials. We have added an Apple clone computer to the
daily school work schedule, and it has proved to be a terrific aid.
God bless you in your ministry there.

Dear Christian Friends,

Greetings -from Papua New Guinea!

Good news is always -fun and exciting to write about. The other day I was in the
o-f-fice and I got this real good -feel ing. Have you had them be-fore? You know, the
kind where you just -feel l ike giggl ing and laughing and dancing a jig, all at the
same time. Well , I'll tell you, I really soaked it up because -feel ings l ike that
don't come around all that o-ften, and l ike any -feel ing, is -fleeting. But as I think
about it, we have a lot o-f things to -feel good about.

We can feel good about the Good News! God loves us and accepts us because His Son
has "made peace through the blood of his cross." We have been transferred from the
domain of darkness into the kingdom of His Son. And what about the l ittle things
day by day that we take for granted? I could go on and on, but I've got just a
couple of things that I want to share with you that have made us feel good. I hope
they make you feel good because you are a part of them.
This week I merged all the chapter files of the Genesis Joseph story into one big
file. As I worked through the big fi le containing the story of Joseph, my first
response was, "Why has it taken so long to get just this l ittle bit done?" <With
very narrow margins it is roughly 30 double-spaced pages). But then I remembered
the hours spent over just a few phrases, or even one word, as my helpers dug into
the depths of their knowledge to find a way to say something in Botin. And I
recalled the hours spent with the computer dividing the words of the texts into
their smallest segments to ascertain their root meanings. And then there were all
the delays for some reason or another. But that was quickly dispelled by the fact
that the major work was over! Now we had a complete text that we could begin to
pol ish and prepare for the Botin people to read. Granted, this won't be easy
e i ther-j--btitttral fi i-sl Uiy slep rs over. Th"at makes us fe^ei mighty good---etnd ~
thankful.

Many of you know that last year Joshua was diagnosed as having a learning disabil ity
in regard to reading. To help him get where he needs to be we have; sought and
received help from a learning special ist here in PNG, purchased a computer and
obtained programs that can make the drudgery of learning fun <and not seem so much
l ike learning at all) and are especially geared to help his specific needs, and
modified our mode of operation so that Bonita can devote her full teaching time and
skill to Joshua (I now teach Jesse). In the last few weeks, we have begun to see
prayers answered. Joshua has recently expressed more of an interest in reading than
ever before. He can't have enough books read to him. He has tried to read way
above his level without prompting, and without getting discouraged. Even in our
Bible story time the other night, he read the first three paragraphs of the story
without being asked and only stalled on Bible names he had not read before. We are
real 1y feel ino oood about that! Of course, l ike the Joseph story, the job is not
done, but a big hurdle has been crossed, and there is l ight at the end of the
tunnel. True, there is a lot of track left before we leave the tunnel , but at least
the 1 ight is there.
We have another reason to feel good. We feel good because we have partners l ike you
who have contributed not only prayerfully, but financially to our ministry here.
Without your participation, this ministry could not continue. Thank you so much for
caring enough to be partners with us in this task. We hope this letter has made you
feel good.
Much love

Dear Christian Friends,

Greetings from Papua New Guinea!

Let me share a conversation I had recently with my language

helper Maso.

We were talking about the Bot i n word<^5umom, a word

we were considering for the translation of God.

he thought about it.

K^^sked him what

He repl ied, "At first I wasn't sure, but

then I asked my father about it.

He said, ''Before, our ancestors

looked about them and said that man couldn't have created all

this: the sky, the trees, and people. It must have been a great
spirit Being! But they'd!dh't know who this Creator was, and so
they cal led Him Yamom.'" Through other discussions, we found out
that Yamom is sti ll around, doing good things for people. Our
minds were already racing
Yamom, the God the people didn't
know, but had created everything. It thri l led us to think that
we could, in part, share- the feel ing that Paul must have had on
Mars Hi lls, when he introduced to the Athenians the Unknown God.
When we introduced the idea to the vi llage elders in .the nextkey

term meeting, they were all very excited about it. In fact, in
a very short time, using Yamom has become quite natural for them.
We are hopeful that many wi ll begin to feel that it is not Just
the white man's God they worship, but their personal God as well.
We recently completed a three week worshop on the book of Luke.
Lewis Foster, formerly of Cincinnati Bible Seminary, led the
workshop. It was very inspiritional and very helpful in getting
us better acquainted with the background of Luke. Dr. and"T1rs.
Rondal Smith, <PBT's president), were also here participating.
Jan Smith led a seminar on home school ing, which was much
apprec i ated!

A week after we get back to Samban, if there is enough water in

our tank <it is the dry season and it has indeed been dry!), a

fellow PBTer David Parrish wi ll be leading a Mini National

Translators' Course for us. Another PBT fami ly, the Wi ll iam
Butlers, wi ll be participating as wel l . We are hoping to use
this to stimulate further interest in our ministry, as well as
screen potential language helpers.
Bel ieve it or not, it is now down to the months in regard to our
returning to the States for our next furlough. It just doesn't
seem possible! Next year wi ll be our third furlough. At that
time, Jesse wi ll become a teenager, and Joshua wi ll be starting
the fifth grade. We would appreciate your prayers for us as we
attempt to complete several projects during these last months
before furlough.
We continue to pray for you and trust that all is well with you.
We are very grateful for your continued support through prayers
and finances.

God bless you.
