What is Metacognition?

Thinking

about Thinking

Knowledge and understanding of what we

know and how we think, including the ability
to regulate our thinking as we work on a task

Knowledge about your own thinking, active

control over your thinking

Metacogniton Involves three kinds of

knowedge

Declarative

Procedural

Self Regulatory

Declarative

Knowledge about yourself as a

learner, that influence your learning and
memory, and the skills, strategies, and
resources needed to perform task _
Knowing what to do.

Procedural
Knowledge

or knowing how to use the strategies

Self-Regulatory
Knowledge

to ensure the completion of the task

There are three essential skills that

allow us to do this:

Plan
Monitor
Evaluation

Planning
Planning involves deciding how
much time to give to a task ,which strategies to
use, how to start, what resources gather, what
order to follow, what to skim and what to give
intense attention to and so on.

Monitoring

Monitoring

is the real-time awareness of How Im doing

Monitoring entails asking,

Is this making sense?

Am I trying to go too fast?

Have I studied enough?

Evaluating
Evaluating

involves making judgments about

the processes and outcomes of thinking and
learning

Advantages of Metacognition

"Metacognition

enhances and enriches the

learning experience"(St. Clair, n.d.)

"Applying

metacognitive strategies such as

self-awareness and self monitoring is to
develop independent learners who can control
their own learning and learn how to learn for
life"(Papaleontiou-Louca, 2008).

Conti.
Metacognition

provides self-monitoring, which

is astep-by-step process ofevaluation during
the learning process.

Metacognition

develops higher learning and

problem solvingskills

Differences in Metacognition
Some

differences in metacognition ability are

the result of development

Metacognitive

ability being to develop around

5 to 7 age and improve through out school

Not

all differences in metacognitive ability

have to do with age and maturation some
individual differences in metacognitive ability
are

Conti..
Probably

caused by biological differences or

by variation in learning experiences

Working

to improve metacognitive skill can be

specially important for student who often
have trouble in school
