Organization is important
Strategic organization : outing a speech together in a particular way to achieve a
particular result with a particular audience.
(easy present + easy to listen & understand)
Strategic order of main points
Chronological order :

a method of speech organization in which the main


points follow a time pattern

Ex : ( ) : cannot skip
Ex : ( 1 2 3 4)
Spatial order

: cannot skip

points follow a directional pattern

Ex : inside outside, north south, leftright, updown


Causal order

a method of speech organization in which the main


points show a cause-effect relationship

*effect comes first, then cause in next paragraph


Problem-solution order : a method of speech organization in which the first
main point deals with the existence of a problem
and second main point present a solution to the
problem.
Topical order
:
a method of speech organization in which the main
points divide the topic into logical and consistent
subtopics

Tips for preparing main points


Keep main points separate
Ex :

I. The first step is choosing the play.


II. The second step is selecting the cast.
III. The third step is conducting the rehearsals.
IV. The fourth step is performing the play.

Try to use the same pattern of wording for main points


Ex : I. Karate improve your mental discipline.
II. Karate increase your physical strength.
III. Karate teaches your self-defense.
Balance the amount of time devoted to main points
Supporting materials :

the materials used to support a speakers ideas. The three


major kinds of supporting materials are examples, statistics, and
testimony.

Connectives : a word or phrase that connects the ideas of a speech and


indicates the relationships among them.
o Transition : a word or phrase that indicates when a speaker has
finished one thought and is moving on to another.
Ex : however, I have spoken so far of , but it was, Now that we
have, let me share
o Internal preview : a statement in the body of the speech that lets the
audience know what the speaker is going to discuss next.
Ex : 12 main points preview 3-4
o Internal summaries : a statement in the body of the speech that
summaries the speakers preceding point or points.
o Signposts : a very brief statement that indicates where a speaker is in
the speech or that focuses attention on key ideas.
Ex : first, second, third, final
